I am [illegible] desirous to [illegible] all the information desired by the Departiment in under that an [illegible] conclusion may be arrived at in regard to these accounts, but such an investigation as you wish me to make would be about impossible at this date. Nearly all the parties wehre signatures are attached to the vouchers have left California for the new [illegible] regions, and I doubt if any reliable information in additon to the explanation givenby M. Hanson can now be [allowed?]. The irregularites appear to me to be in some cases excusable [illegible] to the changes in the currency and the peculiar condition of the Indian [illegible] in this [State?]; as for example when the changes seem higher than the current rate and when advances are made by agents and employes from time to time to meet [illegible] special emergency.
