RECORDS Andover Sept. 14th 1842

The Society assembled at the hour appointed; and(crossed out) after the usual introductory exer-cies and the reading of the Constitution, the follow-ing parts were performed vis, Critcisor by Mr. Livinggood Oration " Mr. Anderson Compostion " Mr. Burbank Declamation " Mr. Livinggood Mirror " the Editor Debate between Messrs Leland and Flint on the question ~ "Has native talent greater influ-ence in forming the character than force of cir-cumstances? Decided in the negative, Aff. 5 - Neg. 12 Voted (underlined) - To invite Messrs Able 1st and 2d, Brown, Carlton, Cornish 1st and 2d, Cornelius, Crocker, Caldwell, Gulliver, Hill, Ledoux, Leach, New, Peabody and Richards, to become members of the Society. Voted (underlined) To appoint a committe of three to write the the Constitution. Messrs Avery, Masters, and Chase were chosen to constitute that com. Voted (underlined) To meet at 7. o,clock during this term. On motion adjourned, Cyrus Bartlett Secretary

Sept. 21st. 1842 The Society assembled as usual; after the opening of the meeting by prayers, the following exercises were performed. Dir. Criticism by Mr. Avery Oration " " Bartlett Compo " " Flint Declamation " " Ferguson Mirror " the Editor Debate on the question "Is the present union of the U. S. more beneficial than a disso-lution"? Disputants Messrs Cook and Searle, decided in the affiremative 20 to 3 Voted (underlined) - To invite Messrs Walcott 1st, Webb 2d / Hathaway 1st and Gill to join the Society. Voted. To adjourn Cyrus Bartlett Sec. (Bottom of Pg.22) Sept.28th 1842 In consequence of the fair of the Eslex County Agricultural Society this day, the exsercised were postponed one week. Sa Samuel Anderson (in blue ink and very large script) October 5th 1842 The Society assembled at the usual hour and, after the preliminary excercises, attended to the following business - Voted to adopt(crossed out) accept the Consti-tution and bye (sic) laws recommended by the Com. (chosen for that purpose Sept 14th) as the Constitution and Bye (sic) Laws of this Society - Each article was the severally adopted. Voted to tender the thanks of the Society to the Com. (Messrs Avery, Masters and Chase) for the able and impartial manner in which they have performed the laborious duty intrusted (sic) to them. Voted that columns fo the Mirror be subject to criticism for this term. The following amendment was offered by Mr. Mas-ters and laid on the table for two weeks, Vis. - "If this Soc-ciety shall ever be disolved the library attatched (the etra 't' between the 'ac' has been crossed out) to it shall become the property fo the Institution", "This amendment to remain unalterable." The Society then listened to criticism by Mr. Hodge, Oration by Mr. Leland, Compo. by Mr. Winn, Declama-tion by Mr. Flint. Mirror by the Editor (Mr. Masters). On account of the lateness of the hour the debate was postponed till next week. Voted to invite J.C. Smith to become a member fo the Soc. Adjourned. Cyrus Bartlett, Sec.
