neither of the Brackenburys, nor yet the Exhibition. He is very angry & declares there has been robbery & that he will migrate to New College. My Lost Lady [novel Lost Lady of Old Years] has not been placed yet, but Lane says that he is doing his best. He is sending me an enormous number of mss just now. Altogether I am fairly overworked, for the Academy wired to me and called for an article on Barry Pain for its Xmas number, and as I had not read that gentleman's books, I had some trouble getting them up. Histories in the papers this week. The annual directory called Men of the Time have put me in this year. They sent me a lot of impertinent questions to answer about my genealogy & my work & prospects. I suppose it is really a great honour.
Hicks-Beach was pretty good last night at the Union. My ordeal comes off next week when I move that "this House is out of sympathy with parochial Fiction".
