GHQ

Oct: 12: 16

My own little darling

Here I am back again in this queer place. We had an appalling crossing and Lord N. [Northcliffe] was more deadly sick than any man I have ever seen. We lunched at Boulogne with Flora and Diana Russell, who sent you their love. We had tea with Newton's daughter, Mrs Warburton, at Abbeville. I am glad you are not working there, my cat. It is deadly dull and she is never allowed to leave the town. You are less in touch with the war than you would be in Balham.

We got ot GHQ about 6.30. I wasn't feeling my best all day, so as soon as I wrote my communiqué I had some of the food you sent me (which I found waiting) and went to bed with a hot bottle. I am much better this morning, and am going to live on the strictest diet till I am

absolutely cured. I am determined to get quite well. I am taking an easy day to-day, and am going to take Newton down to see Cavan [ST: Lord Cavan?] in the afternoon.

Now, my little one, you are going to be very brave & to get quite well too. It is really a very easy comfortable life I have here, and if I don't get fit soon I shall come home. I am going to bring my inside to reason at all costs. The next time I come back I hope I will be in the pink, as the Tommies say.

It was a great joy to see you & the blessings. If you all keep well I shall be all right.

The weather is grey & lowering & not much to boast of. It is warm & windy & altogether miserable. Pray Heaven it changes soon.

Much love, my own little one

Your very devoted

John
