Now don't please be startled at what you may think a very odd request! We want you, if you will, to be Mary's godfather, for she is to be christened in a highly unorthodox way at St Martin's in the Fields on Sat. June 18th, that ceremony having been omitted when she was a baby. No creeds, no prayer-book service, but just a few questions of the simplest kind to Mary and me and her godmother (Maisie Fletcher), and the thing is done. That is apparently what happens now in these 'ere advanced churches. And

we do think you would be such a nice person to have for a godfather, not only because you were the 'face at the window' but because you took your hat off so nicely when we read the Bible out there on the lawn that Sunday, and also because you wrote the 'Path of the King.' So do please say you will! You need not of course come to the function, which is at 2.30 on a Saturday afternoon - an impossible time for such as you. But we should like to think of you in this rather special relation to our little Mary-bird.
