The Manse, Tweedsmuir Scotland
May 29 1935
Dear Mr Buchan
I am not sure if I should say Lord Tweedsmuir as yet, but in any case you must let me express the delight with which I heard that you had chosen a title from a parish dear and familiar to you in long-ago days. It is truly a romantic and sweet- sounding name, and I trust you will long adorn it. I met you first in, I think, 1895 or 1896, at Broughton. I had compiled, in 1893, a volume on the "Ministrelsy of the Merse," and we talked over this and other literary matters. You urged me to attempt a novel dealing with the Covenanters, but writing fiction I have never dared to enter on. Your

father wrote a very good story of the Tweedsmuir Covenanters, and I have often wished it had been issued in book form.
Canada I knew well in 1906, having lectured (during three months) in many of its cities. I stayed for a week in Ottawa, and visited your future abode - Earl Grey was the Governor-General then.
With all good wishes for your success and happiness in a post so great and honourable. Heartiest congratulations on all the honours.

Yours Faithfully
