572 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE Dec 12/84 Ordered that said claims be & they are hereby referred to Street Com tee

Ordinances The Attorney submits an Ordinance entitled "An Ordinance to authorize the execution of a Contract to furnish gas for Lighting the public streets" After due consideration said Ordinance is adopted upon the following vote Towit: In favor of adoption Frye, Harrington, Latimer, Northrup, Rinehart, Snyder, & Yesler. Against adoption; none. An Ordinance is submitted entitled "A special Ordinance appropriating money to pay audited bills" Adopted upon the following vote, Towit: In favor of adoption Frye, Harrington, Latimer, Northrup, Rinehart, Snyder & Yesler. Against adoption; none.

Miscellaneous The Chief of the Fire department submits proposals to furnish beds etc for use of Fire Department. Referred to Fire Com tee Ordered that hereafter the pay of the Street Commissioner be paid out of the City Fund. Ordered that the Chief of Police be & is hereby instructed to transfer one of the Day Policemen to the night force Ordered that the Council stand now adjourned Attest: E S. Dec 22/84 Be it remembered that on this the 22d day of December 1884 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in it's Council Chamber pursuant to the call of His Honor the Mayor. The following officers are present, Towit: His Honor the Mayor John Leary and Councilmen Chas F. Clancey, Geo. F. Frye, W.A. Harrington, B.L. Northrup, Alfred Snyder, E.F. Sox, H.L. Yesler, W.G. Latimer, & W.V. Rinehart.

Communications and Reports From the Attorney on the matter of prosecutions for violations of CityOrdinances. Ordered that the Attorney be & is hereby instructed to submit an Ordinance is accordance with his said report. From G. Kellogg tendering his resignation as Chief of the Fire

Adopted From Chief of Police on the matter of the refusal of officer Webster to take a night beat, suspending Officer Webster & appointing W.B. Thompson in his place temporarily. Claims Paid The following claims having been duly audited by the Council are ordered paid by Warrants drawn on the funds & in the amounts following, Towit:

City Fund G.L. Manning Street Commissioner No. 949 $84.00 S. B. Vrooman J.P's fees No. 950 $17.20 T.H. [Cairne?] ditto No. 951 $20.10

Road Fund L.S. Rowe Rd Poll Tax refunded No. 740 $4.00 Ordered that Road Fund Warrant No. 695 Issued Dec 6, 1884 favor of G.L. Manning for $84.00 be & is hereby cancelled. The Street Com tee make their report on the petition for damages made by J.M. Hoffman, Sarah [Malson?] & C.J. Chilberg recommending that said petition be denied. Report adopted.

-posed repeal of Ordinance No. 617. After arguments pro and con by the representatives of the peitioners Councilman W.V. Rinehart submits the following Resolution; Resolved that it is the sense of this Council that the petition of Bailey Gatzert et al be rejected and that the sentiments of the several remonstrances are in accord with our sentiments and that we adhere finaly to our former expressed purpose to enforce the so called Sunday Law. Thereupon after due consideration said Resolution is adopted upon the following vote, Towit: In favor of adopting said Resolution Frye, Latimer, Northrup, Rinehart, Snyder, & Sox Against the adoption of said Resolution Clancy, Harrington & Yesler. The motion made to require bonds for costs from the prosecuting Witness in all prosecutions of the Sunday law Ordi-nance is [lost?] A petition is presented by E.G. Johnson et al for the passage of an Ordinance, annexed to regulate the sale of Intoxicating liquors ordered laid on the table

The Police Com tee make a report recommending that officer Webster be retained on the Day force and that H.A. Bigelow be placed on night force to fill the vacancy caused by the dismissal of Thos Ross. Ordered by the Council that Officer James Welch be trans-ferred to the Washington Street beat in place of Thos Ross & that Officer Webster stand suspended until he make a satisfactory explanation to the Council.

Referred to Fire Com tee with instructions to report forth with. Ordered that Assistant Chief of the Fire Department Danl McKeon be & is hereby temporarily appointed to perform the duties of Chief of the Fire Department until the Board of Fire Delegates be & is hereby requested to call a meeting of the Board of Fire Delegates for the pur-pose of appointing a Chief of the Fire Department in place of G. Kellogg resigned

Ordinances The Atty submits an Ordinance entitiled "To provide for the remission of the "Ten per cent penalty upon all general and special taxes for the year 1884 which "shall be paid prior to the First day of March 1885." After due Consideration said Ordinance is adopted upon the following vote, Towit: in favor of adoption Clancy
