disburse from you or Mrs. Stanford. It matters not what may turn up I'll hold on here until Mrs Stanford dispenses with me, for I want everything at 1701 K at least all my part of it, wound up in the most satisfactory manner. I keep the office locked during my absence from it and will continue to do so. By this way I am able positively to say that nothing has been touched or disarranged. I note what you say about the dear Governors table drawer. I wont touch it or let any one else touch it until Mrs Stanford comes & opens it herself. We all hope that she will come here again.

I dont understand Hints haste either, but I think it is because he had passes to New Orleans from Savannah Ga had to hurry up to use them. There may have been other reasons but he did not explain to me. Neither did I ask him, for I was busy at the time with other thoughts. He will get along OK as there is considerable push in him when he has to push for himself.

Leland Stanford [illegible] is doing finely. Mrs McCarthy is down stairs again and is doing remarkably well. The baby is pretty but not as large as Crosby or Emmett. But he will do very nice for a fourth edition. I hope you are well. Sen Perkins gets down to the office at 8.30 am. and dont close up until after adjt of Senate sometimes as late as 6 pm. But so far he dont work at nights or on Sundays. He dictates about forty brief letters to me each day and I assure you it keeps me hustling.

Yours J P McCarthy
