man to obtain an audience with. I did most of the talking and it
did not throw us out of the office bodily as we had been lead to
believe might be our fate. He mentioned the matter of more frater-
nities and I managed to have him pave the way whereby I could use
his name to interview President Branner on the subject. I called
on the worthy president alone. The secretary informed me that I
could find him in his private office. I have spoken to him before
when getting information for the D. P. A. but never sat and talked
in as personal a manner. I saw him in the president's office for
the fir st time since his appointment. He swung around in his chair
and asked me to be seated. I talked on the matter of the building
plans and then talked about the matter of a fraternity. He said that
he would be willing to sign a statement to the effect that he had
no objection to the establishment of another national chapter at
Stanford. I talked about the question of registration and later
offered to trace up his congratulatory telegrams which he had loaned
to the D. F. A. for publication. I had to go finally to the Western
Union office and go through all the files for two days to get some
which had been lost. I enjoyed the privilege of talking with him,
and certainly think that through the local paper here I have
gained something at least in that I have been enabled to meet the
most prominent men in the University on a different basis than that
of the class room. We are very dubious about the matter of the
fraternity but hope to have Mitchell, the California boy who with
the co-operation of Ivan started this organization, with us in a few
weeks and he will be able to get some idea of whether or not the
berkeley boys fvor having us put in a petition. It seems to be
up to them in the main, as I have told you before. So much for that.
I was much pleased to receive Ma's letter with the enclosure. I
have bought a desk second hand from Carl Shaw in Encina and though
