have only made a first payment on it will, since Ma desires pay
all of the balance in a week or so. Expenses are naturally high
at the beginning of the year and I suppose at all other times. I
had to pay three seventy five syllabus fees the other day. I have
bought a few new books. Friday I bought a pair of black button
shoes for five fifty. They are large to the point that I fear they
look awkard but I was bound not to have them tight. I have a corn which
bothers me. The tan shoes I have left at the shoe shop to be fixed
on toes and heels. I have also taken laundry to the steam laundry
and to the wash-women. The rug arrived in good order and looks
very well. Ofcourse it is not as large as the other but Lord will
fill out with some little rugs. I had though that the old rug
woudl answer the purpose and then when I left here I could leave
it for the house as most of the boys intend to leave their rugs for
the house. Perhaps however I would have thought that it looked too
shabby once I had it placed on teh floor. In the letter which I
received from Ruth she said that she wanted to know whether I
knew two boys named Gates who lived in Pasadena and who were
cousins of a high school teacher of here in Chicago. That was very
interesting to me inasmuchas one of the boys we took into our house
this year is a cousin of the two boys whom she mentions and who
are themselves cousins of each other, (and our man). I think that
this letter covers about all of interest to you. We are in the
throes of an endeavor to get the proper sort of government in the
house here and so I am much puzzled with problems of discipline and
I sure wish that I knew more about how to get obediance from boys
and also how to make them work for their own best interests and for
the interests of the house as a whole. Some fellows are very in-
consistent and very selfish and it is hard to make them hold to
anything more than a spasmodic reform. From the tone of these
remarks you might be lead to believe that my position here could
