San Francisco May 29 1906

My Dear Alice,

I have thought so often of you. And intended writing - but it is so hard to write. we all feel so unsettled. If I could only wake up and find this all a dream. How little we know what is in store for us. And what a blessing it is that we dont, we couldn't stand it. You can't imagine what a hard time we have had, The earthquake was terrible. But the cruel fire we can never forget. No water. And, for a day or two, starvation staring

us in the face. We surely thought all we had would go.- We tried to save bed cloths and some of our clothes. But let the rest go - There was no way of moving things, and no place to take them. Guess Cora wrote you that they and the Glass family camped in the Presidio one night. We sent our things out there But we didn't want to leave the house until we were ordered out,- for fear the soldiers or some one else would move in. We kept our poor old horse tied out in front ready to take us to the Presidio. But the fire was under control at Van Ness Ave. and we were safe. Mrs. Glass is heart broken over the loss of her home - and I dont blame her - I shed bitter tears when I though I was taking the last look at my home. I am so sorry for Celia. she lost every thing. Had so many of mothers things sewing machine and such things. Both Celia and Mrs Glass have been sick in bed. But are better now. Celia is on the ranch with Mrs. [Sabin? Sabrie?] - The Glass family have rented a furnished house on Lyon St - Just think Fillmore street -"two blocks from us" is the first business st -.
