some one had picked our house up & shook it with all their might - everything & everybody just rattled around. Ben brot our mattresses out into the garden & we put them all along in a row & slept out there. I was [wild?] to take a flash light but was afraid to light the powder. We didn't take off any of our clothes & put plenty over us so we weren't cold but this A. M. our top covers were soaked with dew - none of us took cold. The Haynes & Spencers slept on the porch all night but all the rest in the garden. Guards patrolled all over the campus all night - pacing back & forth all night. The [boys?] took turns of course. The guard was

roped in yesterday & guarded folks stealing things. All night we could hear them call out the hrs "4 o'clock & all is well" - sort of a chant then all together - Sounded terribly wierd yet rather pretty. We slept almost none last night I say we but I slept pretty good. This A. M. we got up about 5 & took a time exposure, hope it will be good but doubt it. Got a film yesterday in [Palie?] & am going to take more picture took several this A. M. before breakfast. [Palie?] is in complete ruins. You should have seen folks

up here last night. Everybody outdoors - early this A. M. we walked around - some were in bed still & all had their mattresses, blankets or tents out on the lawn. We've heard terrible rumors that have gone out about us but they're all false because only 2 men were killed that I know of. The damage to buildings can't be exaggerated I think for the demolition can't be explained. You have to see to believe & then it seems like a dream. The like of this has never been seen or heard of before & can never be surpassed I guess - Oh yes, it could of course - because we might

all be dead & I can't understand how we escaped. If it had been a little earlier or later the loss of life would be appalling. Poor S. F. & the panic-stricken people dead - dead, dying, starving, injured, homeless alone & ruined. It is a terrifying thot.

The entrance gates are crushed to powder [Palie?] is a terrible looking place.

Mr. Hayne has come back from [Palie?] & says there are such mobs fighting to get into the stores they let a few in then lock the door & wait on them & send then out the back door. He couldn't get much

any news from the city.

Furthermore, in regards to my health: I am in the best of health, and with the exception of the annoying mosquito bites with which my arms and hands and face are literally covered I feel fine. Hard work evidently agrees with me. I am also taking exercise in the gymnasium three times a week.

You say you want me to board for a time. Well, if I should do so it would cost $25 including my books.

As it is now it will only cost about $18 or less, although this month may cost more = see page 2 =

Monday Afternoon, Sept. 14, '96. Dearest:-- Having a little time just before school, I thought I would write you a short letter. I have just received your very welcome letter, and was quite pleased to hear from home. Oft - times and I think of home and the pleasant life I spent there, I say pleasant, for I little realized then the happiness of my lot, I get home sick and long to be with you.

Several times Saturday and Sunday, I was on the point of putting on my

The boys seem to think that I was one of the schemers in city politics & go ing "pull" & position through my own political machinations. So, [?] my friends I have acquired a uniqueposition, and I never tak the trouble to inform my friends that my political eminence [proceeds?] from the persuasions "pull" of an indulgent aunt. I have been working fairly well the past week, but have not yet gotten under full steam. I expect to make things [f?] this week, though, and will be well under way by the remainder of the week. If everything turns out well this semester I shall be able to graduate in May with my class, if a cog slips, then my graduation will be defer ed until Sept. I anticipate making up everything, however, and graduating with my class on May 30, 1900. A.D.
