Cloudy some, but exceedingly fine -- AM went & sat for my photo again -- At the session this PM they gave me the big Appropriation bill to engross -- Wont get it till tomorrow -- telegraphed wife that cant get away, today, but will visit you Saturday evening -- Both Houses adj till Monday -- Evening wrote & mailed letter to Sardis Summerfield, Austin -- Evening as usual -- about town -- Bed at 11 --

Saturday Feb 21

Cloudy but pleasant -- Rose at 4 and commenced Enterprise 79 -- Wrote by spells during the day at 5 PM sent it by local train to VA -- Harry P Flannery took charge of it to deliver -- Powell brought me 2 bills to engross, this AM -- started in on the big appropriation bill at 6 PM and kept at it pretty steadily till half past 2 when I completed the job -- 40 sections -- 9 of my pages -- Senate Bill No 97 "An act making appropriations for the support of othe civil government of the State of Nevada for the twenty-first and twenty-second fiscal years." My biggest job

Appropriation Bill 24 bills Smiley dead

of engrossing yet -- William Smiley, the man who has been going with consumption since I have been here, in next room to mine died about 2 oclock tonight -- At 10 minutes of 2 I heard Mrs Smiley make an exclamation like "oh my darling," so I suppose he had just died -- He was formerly a blacksmith in Gold Hill, and for some months past has been dying with consumption -- Bed at 3 1/2

The same -- Flag on State Capitol flying in honor of Washington's Birthday -- I slept till 9 AM -- Found Powell, red the App. bill with him, & he went after a copying clerk to copy it for the State Printer tomorrow -- PM I was about town -- went and sat for my photo again to please Peterson the operator -- Smileys remains coffined in opposite front parlor -- Went to Reno tonight -- Found folks all right -- Supper -- Bed at 10 1/2

Monday Feb 23

Clear & pleasant -- Busy about home -- PM went to lumber yard & got three 16 ft strips of tongued & grooved flooring 6 inches wide -- Carried home on my shoulder --

Patching floor Rich rock

Sawed them in two and relaid a section of the old kitchen floor near the stove, where badly worn -- 8 ft long by 3 wide -- made good job of it -- The chest of books etc, from my room in Austin also a box of rich rock, which I telegraphed Summerfield to send me last Tuesday I found in Reno at home -- This evening I opned the box of ore & selected a lot of pieces of it to take to Carson -- Bed at 11 --

Tuesday Feb 24

The same -- Wife walked to depot with me & saw me off for Carson after breakfast -- Got to Carson about 9 1/2 -- Sat down at once and finished engrossing a four page bill I commenced day before yesterday -- Senate Bill 117 "An Act fixing the salaries of County officers -- Gave it into hands of Powell -- PM attended

session of Assembly -- no more engrossing for me today -- Smiley's funeral took place yesterday, and my room was pressed into service, so I did well to go to Reno as I did &b get out of the way -- Evening at home -- Bed at 12 -- Got letter from Summerfield today --

Wednesday Feb 25

The same -- PMI engrossed 2 bills: S B No 88 -- "An Act to regulate and consolidate the offices of County Clerk's and County Treasurer's, Sheriffs and County Assessors, and District Attorneys and Superintendents of Public Schols" -- S B No 93 -- "An Act to Constitute the Sheriffs of the various counties in the State of Nevada ex-officio Assessors of the same, and also to constitute the county clerks of the various counties in the State ex-officio County Superintendents of Public Instruction,and to provide for the salaries of the same --"Got 2 others -- long ones -- one of about 20 pages, relataive to county officers,which I gave to County clerk Hatch to engross tonight, and the other is S B No 70--"An Act

L P McCarty 29 bills

to provide for the selection and sale of lands that have been or may hereafter be granted by the United States to the State of Nevada" -- Tackled this last mentioned bill after supper, & engrossed 3 pages of it -- 15 more pages to engross -- Bed at 1 -- Sent $2.50 to L P McCarty San Francisco this evening, for a copy of his "Statistician," & canvassing outfit These 4 bills today make 29 bills passing

Thursday, Feb 26

Cloudy but pleasant -- Hatch returned me that bill engrossed at 9 AM -- & I fixed up its title, eyeleted it together, & gave it to Powell with the other, small

W E Sheriden in Louis XI

bills I engrossed yesterday-- Worked today steadily on the long one I hae in hand -- At 5 PM Powell returned me the one I received from Hatch, as not correctly engrossed there being several important blunders -- Hunted up Hatch at once, & he & I & his helper, Mr Judge, overhauled it -- Had to write & insert one entire new page -- etc -- Got through at 8 -- just in time to go to Opera House with Assemblyman Stearns -- He furnishing tickets -- Play was Louis XI King of France -- with W E Sheridan as Louis & his wife Louise Davenport as the Dauphin, & good stock company -- Good house, & good entertainment -- Downtown awhile -- Home at 12 --

Wrote more on my bill -- Kept at it till finished -- took me all night till 6 oclock next morning -- 17 of my pages closely written -- Much the longest of any bill I have yet had -- Senate Bill No 103 "An Act to provide for the maintenance and supervision of

Clear & warm almost as Summer -- Only got 2 hours sleep this morning when Powell came & I deliveredmy work to him -- AM attended session -- got longest bill yet --

1865 and March 7, 1881, and all acts supplementary therto and amendatory thereof" -- 70 pages -- I have about two thirds of it to 2 committee clerks, Ferguson and Plunkett to engross and tackled the other third myself this PM. The Senate this PM passed a resolution giving me an assistant, at $5 per day -- Evening I went to theatre -- Same Company -- Play was Ingomar, the Barbarian" with Sheridan as Ingomar, his wife Louise Davenport as Parthenia -- very fine -- fair house -- Home at 12 -- wrote on my new bill & got up 9 pages -- Bed at daylight --

Saturday Feb 28

The same -- Bed at daylight -- Slept 2 hours -- AM was skirmishing around trying to fix things in the engrossing line, as action of the Senate yesterday, giving me a clerk, or assistant is not good & valid -- Have 2 of the Committee clerks, Ferguson and Plunkett engrossing portions of the big educational bill, & this PM I put a Miss Snyder, a friend of Powell's at work upon a portion of it -- The big bill about public lands which I engrossed last Tuesday, having come back for reengrossment on account of some clerical blunders, I erased and fixed up the little mistakes -- reengrossed one single page, got it in place of the other &
