Fresno, Cal. Sept. 27th, 1914:

William Spry, Esq. Governor of Utah. Salt Lake city, Utah.

Your Excellency:

There is a man confined in the prison at Salt Lake City, under sentence of death, and the uproven, unsubstantiated charge against this man, is murder: Upon the testimony of prejudiced biased, and lying witnesses, this man rests in a felons cell condemned to die, for the commision of a crime of which he is as innocent as your Excellencys' own self. The REAL CHARGE AGAINST THIS MAN, AND THE CRIME FOR WHICH HE IS DOOMED TO DIE, IS THAT HE IS A LABOURER, WHO FOR MANY YEARS HAS FOUGHT AGAINST THE UNJUST, AND ROTTEN SOCIAL SYSTEM UNDER WHICH WE, THE TOILERS OF THIS LAND, STRUGGLE FOR THE MEANEST KIND OF A RARE EXISTENCE.

This man, your Excellency, is Joe Hill and not JUSTICE OUTRAGED, but BIG BUSINESS, as represented by the money grabbing interests of the GREAT STATE OF UTAH has decreed that this man must die.

And now, William Spry, Governor of Utah, I appeal to you, in the name of the working men of ALL THE WORLD, to exercise the prerogative of your high office, and

FREE THIS FELLOW WORKER OF OURS FORM HIS PRISON CELL in order that YOU, Governor Spry, may not have upon YOUR HEAD, the innocent blood of this victim of CAPITALISTIC GREED, and corrupt INJUSTICE.

Does your Excellency believe that the murder of this poor labourer, Joe Hill, by the rich and powerful Commonwealth of Utah, at the instigation of the rulers of money, will bring to a halt, the struggle that the workers all over this broad land are making for industrial freedom and RIGHT?

I tell you NO, Your Excellency, such a fearful MURDER, of Joe Hill, in vengeance for the death of a fellow mortal, whom he NEVER HARMED, will but have the effect of fanning the already seething flames of a world wide discontent, and will but hasten the day of final reckoning, when the emancipated toilers of the earth, will throw off the yoke that has held them in bondage to the greedy few, who, for the lust of power, and the lure of unearned wealth, halt at no crime in the calendar, to keep their slaves in bondage. I am but an uneducated, and lowly toiler in the ranks of labour, Your Excellency, but I venture to say to you, William Spry, of Utah, that the time will come, and speedily, when you men who sit in the seats of the mighty, will take heed, when we, the lowly of the earth speak.

And now, Governor Spry, of Utah, I ask you in conclusion in the name of HUMANITY to FREE JOE HILL!!!
