He was (...) it [portion of top missing] Southern Oratorical contest but got beat. Had a fine trip at night. We went way up on one of the mountains to the observatory & had a view through the big telescope—glass 26 inches in diameter. Saw moon, the

extinct volcanoes and so called seas. Our telescope is the 3rd largest in the U.S. Above is a revolving disk & whole lot of machinery. Surely interesting. We ran most of the way back, and the road was beautiful & sureley wooded and rough. Talked until
