Nothing much doing all day. Became a little excited as night came on. The contest for oratorical honors

was held in the Jeff at night. Six contestants — among them [Joseph S.] Lawton (class of 1905) & [Charles Anderson] Wickliffe (class of 1905). Judges — [Professor Charles] Graves, [Professor William Minor] Lile (class of 1882) & Rogers. I spoke on American Aristocracy. Jos Lawton won the medal — worth $50. I felt pretty blue but not as much so as

after being at commencement. However I have the satisfaction of knowing that I wrote my own speech & trained my self. Joe was trained by the elocution teacher up here. I haven't had a victory of any kind for such a long time

that I have become disgusted and discouraged. Am hoping that the tide will change some day, & that I can do a little something. [Neill Wilson] Funk (class of 1905), [William Henry] White (class of 1905) & [Harry E.] McCoy (class of 1906) bummed on us until 1 AM. Went to bed and faced a very restless & sleepless night.

Wrote to mama but didn't mention the contest as it would only make her feel badly. Went to church but didn't hear much of the sermon. Received a letter from Virginia Pilcher. O what a
