Dear Sir,

We enclose the acknowledgment of Acting Secty Hale for Certain documents relating to the claim of Jno. M. Cavalry; $3000.= The claim is probably of no value now having been presented too late, Still it is on file & if anything can be made out of it we would like it.

Do you understand from the award of the arbitrators, that Government is to take a slice out of the money to be paid, for expenses incurred in chasing Cruisers? -- & is a commission to sit at Washington to audit the claims?

Truly yours Barling & Davis

New York Sept. 20 1872

Wm W. Crapo Esqr New Bedford

Dear Sir,

We have your favor 18 Inst. The result of the labors of the Geneva Tribunal is not by any means what we all expected, still the "Sufferers" will get something to add to their already pretty full purses, & we are glad of it. We have a letter from Mr. Beaman written 4 Inst. advising us that he will remain from six to eight weeks longer in Europe, & we therefore cannot look for him much before the middle of Novem. Meantime it might be well to consider what further is needful to be done here to protect the interests of our clients, & at same to secure our personal interests in the way of commissions which, as you remark, are of some magnitude.

We wish you would consider what character of Bill would meet the case in point & if need be have a Committee consisting of Mr. Tucker & other gentlemen, who are well acquainted with Mr. Fish, to go to Washington & consult him in regard to his wishes in the premises, but as the Official report of the doings of the Arbitrators will probably be make public, within a few weeks

it would be as well to wait until that is done. Messrs. Evarts & Cushing can & will unquestionably, assist us in getting Mr. Fish to adopt any Bill having their approval, & they will no doubt approve of anything that you may draw up covering the grounds. Is it well do you think to get you local papers or the Boston papers to commence arguing the necessity of Congress passing some bill in the early days of the Session, or had we better wait until the gentlemen named return?

How much do you figure is to be deducted for prospective Catch & care?

Truly Yours Barling & Davis
