27th march. Finishing sewing Oats at stony pint & will finish there to day overseer getting Rafters for Corn shelling Room to be put ^{to Corn house}_Hous shortly Jordan Coltering at Crews Piling wood & Rails finishing new ground fence Joining the mountain field to day Sewing Oats at Crews, Let^{Big Henry have} 12 lbs Bacon this 27th day of March for 1 month, Jacob has been down after Blade fodder & Bacon & Caddles [Candles?] Mr EG Lewis cut spayed & marked 14th shoats this day & Turned out a Black one for a ^{thats with Pig}Sow Beautiful weather about this time –

28th Nannie & me & children went to Cedar Hill & Mr Jno D Hunts to day fine day —

29th Sewing Oats at Crews, Fencing around granary Lot this morning & then at new ground Piling wood & Rails, Jordan carried Black Boar to mountain springs woods Pasture with Hunt Sow etc, - & then Halled up one stack blade Fodder this morning - a little cooler this morning Jordan coltering crossing to Hill at overseers Malissa had a Boy Child this morning after sun Rise, Sent for Doct Thompson but the Boy did not get him,- Mrs Neal here Sent to Mill with Cart 3 Turns Corn all for us tho one is for overseer, but he will take one of ours ground at Mill & whats in his Bag will be ours Send also 2½ Bushels wheat for overseer, All to Yates Mill

30th Rolled Logs to day Did not get done

31st Rolled again to day & expect to finish

April 1st Finished rolling Logs this ^{have Rolled in all nearly 3 days}morning &

1858 april 12th Ground is as wet as I ever saw it allmost in my life

13th Rained nearly all night striping Tobacco to day, carried one Load of Lugs to Mr Andersons 1528 lb as pRec^d. - Lowry striped to day & Jim & mule went to Carry Tobacco to Riceville

14th Plowing coltering shrubing in corn field & Hilling cleared off pretty day -- 18 Lambs to this day - all my shoats Mr Lewis altered ^welldone

15th Beautiful morning a little frost this morning Plowing for Corn, fencing this morning. Jordan Halling wood & Rails out of new by Crews & then Coltering Hilling up there, I am going to Cedar Hill this morning,- Halled out the last of Our wheat Straw this evening

16th Plowing for Corn Planted 3½ Rows Sweet Potatoes from Capt Fitzgeralds yesterday Jordan coltering Balance Hilling, little ^Henry gone to Mill for Chumbly Bro^t one^Turn back & left one there for him like for Rain — or snow

17th Plowing for Corn, next to Orchard Crossing next to Chumblys & Hilling Tobacco Hills,- Rained last night & likely for falling weather to day weather moderate, Halled out Our last wheat straws, Tobacco Plants size of a 4½^d up & growing fast; cloudy weather at this time

18th went to meeting House about Sunday School, but few attended it Rained

19th Still cloudy I am starting for Court Plowing for Corn Burning Log Heaps Mr Hunts John came here to do up back etc

20th Burning Logs Plowing coltering & Hilling croping new ground cloudy all day Monday & Tuesday till evening I Did not get from court till Tuesday night

1858 Wednesday 21st Rained about 1 Oclock last night I got home from Court about midnight and rained tremendous hard Twice striping Tobacco This morning not ready to plant corn yet moderate ^weather except very wet, etc Turned out Our Cows This morning —

22nd Halled up 2 stacks Blade fodder this morning, & 2 stacks Oats, Plowing for corn this morning & expect to beging to Plant corn to day - chumbly & Buck at work on Hen House, alse & jerry Smith Hilling will send to day up to Plantation after Mike, as Jacob has bot a mare of Gipsies & says he borrowed the money of Wm Cook to pay for $115. She is to work in mikes place & I take him home for me to ride, Beautiful weather about this time,

23 Planting Corn, alse little & Jerry Smith Hilling up here, at Crews Jordan crossing & trying to finish up there to day fine day windy & drying weather - Mr Little sets this morning to get Shingles

24th Sent Jordan to Yates Mill 1 Log for weather Boarding & 2½ Bushel corn for meal weighed & to bring back 4 Bushels for me weighed & 1 For Chumbly,- Sent 1½ Bushels Corn to Mrs Hunts to swap for seed planting corn next to orchard, Henry laying off for chicked corn left hand side of path going thro field little Henry & alse Hilling - very cool & clear this morning my meal & overseers dont hold out by 3 lb in each bag 3 bags Horse came from Cedar Hill about the 20th april for me to ride

1858 May 12 Very cool & Windy, wind from East wind blew hard all night, Hilling on Johns Branch & trying to finished there this Lugs^{& Picked Plant Beds}finished I am going to allen Scruggs to get him If I can to help Jas B Faris prize Tobacco,

13th Jordan coltering new ground,- began to colter & Hill Second years ground at Mountain this morning Little fixing his machine to get shingles,- fixing another colter this morning - Picked Plant Beds.

14th Jordan coltering new ground balance Hilling at fresh ground & cutting them off Henry went with waggon up to Cedar Hill to hall Logs out of new ground halled 9 to Worshams & left 4 or 5 to Hall yet, we have finished planting greens in Garden,- Hester ranaway at Jacobs halling Logs with Jim but did not thank the Lord hurt any thing much, worsham is to saw the Logs into weather boarding Square edged Plank & slats to put smoke house 3 or 4 Inches wide & ¾ think [thick] to Keep out rats after its daubed the Plank we want to cover a shelter for waggon Carr^d 2 Turns 4 Bus. Corn to worsham ^{& got it}for meal

17th I went to Court, took down all our Second rate Tobacco this morning & Pack it ready for prizing & cooped the Lugs ready to carry away- Sold Faris’s to anderson for $8 around etc to be deliv^d soon as possible went to Coltering & Hilling in evening

18th waggon & cart Halling out manure Balance Hilling at mountain, Sandy with Henry & Jordan Halling out manure — Very hard rain in evening & after it we [drea?] Tobacco Plants

1858 June 24th My Horse Taken sick at Fannies this morning Jerry Came after me I went up there & found him Dead, Died about 10 Oclock I reckon his Disease was Grubs & Colic, – My Wife up there yet,- very Hot weather

25th Rained this evening about night Cutting wheat Finished by new Barn & Cut some in fresh field, nannie came home & Kate with her Just before the Rain, Jordan nearly broke Henry Jobing etc working out Lot by House

26. I went to Mr Hunts & Cedar Hill We are cutting wheat prizing Tobacco weeding Tobacco & Plowing some in Tobacco -

28 This morning put all the tobacco we had out Saturday in Hh^ds under prize. Cutting wheat in fresh ground all out for once - Mr Morton ^^Pannill is to be buried to^day

29th Henry taken Sick with Bowel Complaint again at 12 Oclock very Hot weather Cutting wheat yet Henry Plowing in Corn Malissa at work in Tobacco at Crews Shower of Rain last Evening after Dinner

30th Finished Cutting wheat yesterday evening Henry Plowing in Corn & Cotton, malissa in Tobacco, Laying by Corn to day & weeding Tobacco at Crews,- Dry & Hot weather

July 1st weeding Tobacco at Crews Plowing by Corn out next to orchard - Sewed Peas in Corn this morning - prizing Tobacco every morning, nearly done 2 Hhds

2nd working Corn on Branch with Hoes but Did not get done before the Rain fine Rain in evening Laying by Corn next to orchard 3rd Rained yesterday to day 2nd we Replanted Tobacco in morning & then Cutting Oats.
