A colde windy day. Ben & Jim burned a plant bed today. Nellie & I got dinner. Mrs Carr staid up stairs most of the day. The children went to school. I got a letter from Effie. She writes that there is a lot of sicknesss at Blacks Burg. Hattie washed here today. We have had snow showers today. I have not heard from the sick around here today. Do hope they are better by now. I have mended some things to day. Among them was Edna's cloak. Edna & Mabel both went upstairs tonight with Mrs. Carr.

Wednesday, January 17, 1923

A clear cold day. Jim and Ben finished burning their plant bed and sowed it. They got seed from Mr. Edmonds. Edmonds? folks are sick with the flue. Nellie washed some today. I got dinner. I cooked a chicken and baked some bread for to send to Mr. Owen's people. Their little boy died today. Mrs Owen has pneumonia. I do hope that she may get well. Ben has gone to Owens tonight. Mrs Carr churned for me a gain today. Mabel & Edna has gone with Mrs. Carr upstairs. Edna has come back. Today has been the coldest day of the winter.

Thursday, January 18, 1923

A colde windy day. Ben loaded his tobacco on the waggon this morning and started for Gretna this evening. Intends to stay at Marvin's tonight. I hope it will not rain while he is gone. Nellie ironed some this morning. I got dinner and churned. Mr. McEray ?? come here this morning. Mrs Carr did not come down stairs until twelve o'clock. She had a head ache. The children went to school. I am so near asleep that I can't write.

Friday, January 19, 1923

A good day. Jim and John Ward burned a plant bed. Ben come from Gretna. He solde his last tobacco today. he is very well pleased with the price. He staid at Marvin Smiths last night. Kate and Irvin come a little while this evening. Nellie sewed on Evylin's aprons this evening. Edna brought water tonight. Mrs Carr got a good mess of salit today. We certainly did enjoy it. I baked sweet potatoes for the children to eat when they come home from school. Ben brought some apples from Gretna.

A bad day. Rained some. Today was the day that the farmers got their 2nd pay ? for their tobacco. Ben and Jim and Mrs. Carr and I went to Gretna. Mrs Carr went to Lynchburg. Ben carried me to Marvin Smith's. I was glad to see Carrie and the children. The boys staid at Gretna most all day. They got their pay. We got home by night. Nellie staid home with Mabel. Nellie said Mabel did fine. She got time to sew a lot. Nellie had a nice supper for us. We heard today that Mrs. John Mayhew died this morning. There was a big crowd at Gretna today, all anxious for their money. All are well here tonight.
