board of her. I dont understand why we are making so much northing when our courses have not been higher than E to E.N.E. However we are making fine progress & if such breezes continue may hope to be in England in ten days more.

The sky today is very misty and we can scarcely see a ship two miles distant I think we may expect a Northwester Our ship for a cotton loaded ship is very staunch & we can carry sail heavy At 3 1/2 P.M. almost without any appearance came heavy rains from the west. Wind died away. At 8 PM wind came out in gusts from N.W. & cold & raw. Braced yards on port tack to correspond, & set Mainsail. Ship going about 7 knots E 1/2 S. Ends with thick cloudy weather and cold. 13 Days from Savannah

Saturday December 10th 1859

Begins with strong breezes from the NW & hauling to Northward. Turned two reefs from Topsails & set Spanker. Main T. Staysail Inner Jibb. Whole Mainsail to Crossjacks. Ship going about E by S. 8 Knots The weather really cold & disagreeable. Never mind. This same cold wind will carry us quickly into port, & then I shall hear from home. How many have no home. not even in the bosom of their Saviour They drift about without compass or helm and in the storms of life make shipwrecks of their souls. And yet above them & within their reach is a chart which shows every shoal & rock, every dangerous coast. & every safe harbor. And a Pilot offers His faithful services. Some listen but more drift on until the rock bound coast of destruction is under their lee. & the surges of sin are bearing them hopelessly on. Human life lightened as it by by a view of eternity, is made a dreadful a fearful drama. only made less fearful by the few who look up & receive the chart & Pilot and gain the harbor of eternal
