28 The Quarter Masters They are responsible that no noise takes place on the upper deck during working hours, or at any time abaft the bridge.

Washed clothes are to be hung up to dry on a Yard whip to the Stern. The Quarter Master is to see that the clothes are properly stopped on with no gaps, commen cing at the Yard Arm. Towels only may be hung to the ridge ropes to dry from breakfast till 9.15 a.m.

They will take care that no towels or clothes are washed or hung up at improper times, or places without special permission. Whenever any men have been pipid to get their dinners xc. and the lower deck is cleared in the meanwhile they are to ask whether the men are to remain below or not, in order that the word may be passed. They are responsible that stores on coming on board, are handed over to the Officer responsible for them. Any loss or damage caused by their neglecting to do so, will be made good by stoppage from their pay. No Beer, Wine, or Spirits is to come on Board without a permit from the Executive Officer. The Permit Book will be kept by the Master at Arms.

The Quarter Masters 29 They are to pay particular attention to piping correctly, more especially that the men required to perform any duty are distinctly named in the Pipe. They are to learn the Sem aphore, that they may be able to make or take in a signal. The Signalman is to give them every assistance in learning it.

If stationed at a Gun, or Magazine they all attend divisional drill, being relieved by the Quarter Master stationed at the Helm & Conn. They are responsible for the cleanliness of the fighting tower, the Wheels, the Compasses, and Chart [Boxes] table. They will keep the Keys of the Buckets. Two Quarter Masters are always to be on board. Quarter Masters are to be allowed leave whenever their duties do not require them on board, but on working days are not to be granted leave until after divisions, or if no divisions or morning quarters for inspection, until 9.20 a.m. They are to be on board by 8 a.m. unless they have special permission to the contrary. One of the Quarter Masters off watch will do the duty of Portman. He is always to inquire before leaving the Ship if there are any letters to go.

30 The Quarter Masters. When the Ship is lying in River. He is always to call at the Custom House, Port Adelaide, and inquire of the Porter there, if there are any letters there for the Ship and also deliver to him any Official letters he may be in charge of for conveyance to Adelaide. They will bring all service letters that may arrive to the Commanding Officer. They are to be instructed where the Primers, Primer holders, laniards and Blank Cartridges are kept, in order that they may be able to fire a signal Gun at any time.

In the event of the Caretaker at the Naval Depot requiring immediate assistance at any time he will fire a Blank Cartridge from the six inch Gun, and if in the day time, hoist the Ensign upside down. In boisterous weather when it is not desirable to keep the Ensign hoisted it is to be flown at 8 a.m. for five minutes and then hauled down. For Sunset it is to be hoisted five minutes beforehand. They are to report any unusual recurrence to the Commanding and Executive Officers. They are to report to the Executive Officer all routine reports as ordered by him. They are to report to the Commanding Officer 8. a.m. Noon, Sunset and 9. p.m. The Bugle call is to be sounded at Sunset and 9. p.m.

The Quarter Masters 31 They are to report to the Executive Officer up till 9.p.m. the Captains leaving the ship or returning on board. They are to report the arrival and departures of Men of War and Mail Steamers which are to be entered in the Log. They are to report to the Captain and Executive Officer all Officers of and above the rank of Commander, coming and to the Second Lieutenant all other Officers or Officials coming, and to receive with due respect, according to the Custom of the Royal Navy, all Officers, taking care in all cases that the side is ready. If the Signal boys are on watch the Quarter Masters will take care that they are keeping a good look out. He will report all Signals to the Captain and Executive Officers. All salutes that may be fired are to be reported, the number of Guns counted, and entered in the Log. The Quarter Masters are to sign the Ships Log, which will take place at a fixed time to be arranged by the Second Lieutenant.

The deck Log is to be placed in the Captains Cabin every forenoon at 9.a.m. by the Quarter Master of the Forenoon watch. An account of all Stores Provisions xc is to be en tered in the Log, the invoice being given to the Officer in charge of the stores.

32 The Quarter Masters.

The amount of water received, as indicated by the Ships Meter, is to be accurately entered in the Log. An entry to be made in the Log of every time a Steam Launch is employed and for what purpose. The work the Artificers are employed about is to be entered in the Log forenoon and afternoon.

In the event of Provisions not coming off at the appointed time, an entry in the Log is to be made to that effect. On all Officers going on shore or coming on board they are to warn previously all Boatkeepers Men in Boats or Side party to [that effect] pay due respect. They will see that the Boats crews are always properly draped and that they man their boats smartly. They will immediately report any slackness to the Executive Officer particularly any boats pullling badly, or not having their sails proper ly set. They are not to allow any shore boats to make fast alongside unless by special permission of the Executive Officer. They are to see that no Boat remains in the wake of the Gangway or in the way of Boats coming or going to and from the Ship.

They are to hail all boats approaching the Ship after dark.
