The Quarter Masters. 33 They are not to allow any boats to hang about the booms, or in the Vicinity of the Ship at night. No Boats excepting the Galley or Skiff, are to be made fast astern, excepting rough weather. No Boat, including the Skiff, is to be called away, without permission of the Executive Officer. On letter B. being hoisted at the [bruck] of the flagstaff at the Captains house a boat is to be immediately sent on shore and the Coxs wain is to go to the Captains house for orders. After dark: a long light burnt will in dicate the same It is to be answered by waving a lantern. On Letter B being hois ted at the Flagstaff Largs Bay a boat is to be sent to the shore and the Coxswain is to go to the Post Office and answer the Signal.

Men and Boys away after 9.p.m. are to be allowed to sleep in until 6.15. a.m.

Nothing heavy is to be passed up the accom modating ladders, but is to be whipped out by the davits forward. When visitors come on board one of the older Boys are to be to [told] off to show them round and explain things to them.

34 The Quarter Masters On those days on which a large number of Visitors are allowed on board, the breech action of the Guns are to be padlocked excepting that of the 4th Gun or 5th Gun which is to be left open for inspection, the Quarter Master being responsible, that no Visitor handles it. If necessary a man is to be stationed at the Gun, to enforce this order and also to explain the working. The Captains Cabin passage door is to be lock ed up during General leave, and at Evening Quarters after all the keys have been returned, if no Evening Quarters at 4.30 p.m. and the key kept by the Quarter Master.

If no one is sleeping in the Ward room Cabins the Ward Room is to be locked up and the Skylights screwed down on the lights being put out, or on the last W.R. Officer leaving the ship and the key kept by the Quarter Master.

If the Quarter Master, whose turn it is for duty on board desire leave, they must make their own arrangements about getting their duty done. Other Petty Officers are not to be taken from their regular work to look out for them.

At Sea, 8 am, Noon, and 8 p.m. are always to be reported to the Captain, by the Quarter Master, if the Captain is not on the Bridge, by the Officer of the watch if he is. The Quarter Master is to ask the Captain ten minutes before these times if he requires the Patent log hauled in.

The Quarter Masters. 35 When the Captain requires the Skiff it is to be manned by two of the Galleys.

On Sundays half holidays, and on all occasions of General leave. The Quarter Masters will see that all the Guns are covered at Sunset and at any other time during those days if rain threatens.

The Quarter Masters off duty from 9.30.am. or after General Quarters Thursday until 8 a.m. Saturday Are not required to come on board at 8 a.m. on Friday unless specially ordered, they are to arrange with their opposite numbers about cleaning their guns and the duty of Portman is to be done by the Quartermaster off watch on board. This leave though over 24 hours is to be considered as Saturday to Monday leave and is not to affect their compensation or rations.

The Artificers. 41 They will attend on deck whenever the hands are called.

The Sailmaker will keep the Tire Engine clean.

The Painter will keep the Quarter deck Pump clean.

The Carpenter will Keep clean.

1st The woodwork of the Ward room hatch inside and outside. 2nd The Wardroom Skylight. 3rd The Beading round the hammock Berthing, and round the Wheelhouse.

The Armourer will keep the Armourers bench clean. The Lamptrimmer will keep the Harness [cask] clean. If from any cause the Artificer is unable to clean that which he is [told] off for, it is to be cleaned by the men belonging to that part of the Ship in which it is. The Carpenter and Painter are to give in lists every week to the Second Lieut of what stores have been expended and for what purpose. The Armourer, and Sailmaker will do the same with the Gunner and Chief Bos Mate respectively.

42 The Artificers. All Metal work,, screws or nails in the boats, excepting slings and bolts for ditto, are to be of brass or copper.

The Painter should not be employed in such work as painting boats excepting cutting in a line and occasionally superintending.
