The Trustees of the University now in Hillsborough

Gentlemen

At the last General Meeting of the board of Trustees; an Ordinance was passed authorising & directing the Treasurer, after deducting the Sum of £3250 - appropriated for carrying on the buildings, to vest, the balance remaining in his hands, together with such sums as might come into his hands, before the next Annual Meeting of the board, in the Six percent stock of the funds of the United States, at a price not exceeding the specie par value -

In obedience to this Ordinance I have endeavoured to obtain draughts on some of the Mercantile Citys to the North by which I might be enabled to purchase stock - but hitherto without success - And of Late it has been suggested to one by some Gentlemen on whose Judgement I have great reliance, that considering the present critical situation of Public affairs, it would be Imprudent /[begin strikethrough] at this time [end strikethrough] to lodge the money of the University in the Public funds - On considering

ing the Ordinance I observe that I have no discretionary power & if I had, I am not sufficiently acquainted with the subject to determine with satisfaction to myself what I ought to do I have therefore thought proper to request the advice of the Trustees now present
