1856 May 10th Planted Pumpkins Seed on Branch & Potatoes this week, Henry gone to Mill 6 Bushels Corn 5 Bushels wheat, & will bring 3 Turns 6 Bus from Mill of meal Very Cool & windy flies eating Tobacco plants very I Planted 21 Hills this morning Sent Mrs Coleman My Buggy umbrella etc to go to Colo Colemans — My wife & Jacob gone to Fannys to day

11th We have 7 Lambs living 3 young ones Another cool Windy day for the time of the year Picked Plant Bed above house yesterday Fannies Black Mare took Mr Farris s Jack On saturday 10th May 1856 Card by Mr Barber

12th We have another Cool morning drying weather — Doct Thompson come down this morning to see Boil Clem's

13th Halling Out manure Picking Plant Beds in slash this morning & manuring them & then replanting Corn –

14th Replanting Corn in Johns s field Henry & Jordan Halling Out manure & expect to finish on Lot to day Began to Harrow Corn this day on Johns s Branch, Fannie here Since Sunday all the sick here seems to be getting better Lowry sitting up right Smart etc etc

15 Halled up 2 stacks fodder & 1 stack Oats & had to Lay off fresh ground at stony pint & Plant Corn over hogs rooted up Hill nearly F went home this morning Hilling at stony pint [water stain] Harrowing corn on Johns Branch

1856 May 15th Henry & Jordan Coltering on Johns s Branch for Tobacco - Cleared off Milly had a fine Heifer Calf about this time, Hilling at stony pint Coltering & fixing Johns’s Branch to Hill Sandy Harrowing& fixing Corn

16th Plowing Beding & Hilling On Branch this morning we took down all the Tobacco we had striped & cooped it & expect to deliver it the next week,- began to

17 Strait Stone M day very pretty weather

18th cloudy & warm this morning going to Court about McCullocks matters & waller Hilling on Branch Cutting off new ground Hills & finishing Hilling at stony pint. Henry plowing in Corn field — –

19. Hilling on Branch & Cut of new ground Hills Henry Plowing in Corn field I went to Court - fair & clear

20. Card another Load tobacco making 1st 1938 lbs & this day 1971 lbs @ $8.50- Picking Plant Bed above House finished Hilling all But Lot - this day

21 Picking Plant Bed in Slash this morning Scattering manure & Plowing Lot -

22nd Henry gone to Mill 1 Bushel Corn Replanting Corn on Branch & Weeding Corn on Johns’ Branch etc Cool & dry Jordan sick again Buck sick Doct has been here about 11 times in all

23rd Coltering & weeding Corn Plowed scattered manure on Lot back of Garden Plowed & worked Irish & Sweet Potatoes etc Jordan & Abram sick Doct has been here Some 12 or 13 times to see them in all I am sick taken this morning Swimming in my head & cant stand up all day Took [water stain] does Colomel etc and this 24th day I feel rather better my head is clear and I can stand & walk about Cool morning

Saml T Miller 45. Thomas T Adams 38 & Doct John H Estes 32 votes for Sheriff in this Precinct Whitehead upwards of 60. Bennett about 13 for Commonwealth attorney Treadway Forest constable Jas P. Lewis overseer of the Poor for Comm. Yates 27 Tucker 18 Shelton Vincent 14 Shelton Saml T. 1.

25. Fair windy dry day Jordan Lowry & buck Sick Wed Corn yesterday Saturday by Johns’s spring Coltering before the Homes & Harrowing

26th Cutting off Second years ground Hills Henry Plowing in Corn – cool & windy Hester & Mr Faris Jack this day

27th Doct T. has been here 13 or 14 times to see Jordan Lowry & Buck Jordan particularly sick Weeding & Plowing Corn clear & windy my Bro Jonathon here at this time,- Tobacco Plants fine & beginning to dry a little —

28th Weeding & Plowing corn in Johns field

29th Plowing & weeding corn Planted Tobacco On Johns Branch yesterday morning as we had a late shower of Rain night before

30 went to Court House this day -

30 Made Sheep Pen Hilling Potatoe Patch working & Plowing corn etc very clear & dry & windy Sandy taken Sick yesterday

31 weeding & Plowing corn Sandy in House

June 1st Doct Thompson came to see the sick Jordan Lowry Sandy & abraham all sick Doct. Thompson has been here since 1st aprl about 14 or times I think Jordan bad off

1856 June 1st My Bro Jonathan left here yesterday will stay in Riceville a day or 2 & then he is going to Orange

2nd Sent Henry to mill this morning 6 Bus corn & brot back 6 Bushels sent Mr Hancock 3½ Gallons vinegar Sent for my Lime & Plaster brot from Lynchg by Mr Yates dry weather at this time no Tobacco planted yet of consequence Cutting of Tobacco Hills at stony pint this morning & replanting Corn, & then weeding Corn in Johns field, trying to get done

3rd Card all the Tobacco to andersons we have striped,- weeding corn

4th Jordan Sandy Lowry Buck & Johnson all sick clem waiting on them -

4th Rained a little this evening we set out one square collard plants, weeding & Plowing Corn. & Lila Harrowing Cotton this June

5th Fair & clear this morning — working in corn to day I am going to Mr Hunts for Mrs Clements

6th Rained a fine rain last night planting Tobacco Sandy very sick sent for the Doct. etc etc

6th Fine Rain last night we planted Tobacco at Stony pint new ground. & part of fresh ground next to Crews — still cloudy & fine season

7th Finishing fresh ground next to Crews this morning Plenty of Plants to Plant every Hill we shallhave not done weeding corn yet began to Bed Lot this evening, Jordan Sandy Lowry & Buck sick and Johnson, too the Doct has been 3 times to see Sandy & between 15 & 20 timesin all

8th Fine day & not much Rain

9th Plowing Beding Lot Hilling & Planting Rained in the evening, shelling corn

1856 June 10. thining corn ground too wet to Plow striping Tobacco in barn Back of Garden cloudy & Raing a little —— Jordan Lowry & Buck getting better & so is Johnson Sandy is very Sick & the Doct has been here nearly 20 times here this evening since last of april

11th Striping tobacco belonging to Jerry s etc & Fed Thining corn etc Replanted Tobacco on Branch Sent Jerry to Riceville to get [name?] Paragone etc – – Jacob gone to Fannies

14 Raining the most of this week striping mostTobacco of this week, here to day - weeding Corn & Plowing Corn We have thined the most of Our Corn — we think Sandy has been for 3 days very low a little better

15 Sandy Smartly better Doct T. here this morning clear pretty day ¬– we have not sheared our yet –sheep =Jordan Lowry & Buck getting better

16th I went to Court & returned same day - settled with Mar & Give up James McCullocks Heirs negroes or give Wm H Waller an order for them

17 Finished weeding & Plowing Corn below orchard this morning Began to Bed & Plant Tobacco in Lot when it Commenced Raining raining and we had to stop striped Tobacco evening in

18 Replanting Tobacco this morning & Planted all the Beds made in Lot ground very wet we have finished Thining corn Fannie Fitzgerald sent her waggon down with my one of my calves & got Tobacco plants and my wheat Fan which I Lent her or she takes for $5

19 Plowing & weeding corn at stony pint Plowing & Hilling up Irish Potatoes & work Cotton this day ¬fine clear day
