Notebook contains kept by Benjamin Waterhouse (1754-1846) while he was attending medical lectures and studying at St. Thomas's Hospital in London, England, in 1775. Waterhouse's notes include lists of symptoms to be attended to in all cases, such as checking the pulse, eyes, tongue, and urine, as well as charts of patient case histories, with the time admitted, name, age, symptoms, and medicines administered.

Eckley | 16 | Was seized (four days ago) suddenly as one would think would arise from a violent & sudden exertion of muscular strength he complained of violent pain in the back & shoulders, he has now a cough with great difficulty of respiration with a Diarrhea or reather a Dysentery he has a pain in his limbs like an acute Rheumatism . Dr F. thinks there is a Phlegmon in his lungs, so that in this complicated case we have to combat with a Diarhea, Rheumatism & Peripeumony. It might be supposed that the sudden exposure to the cold after being very hot occasioned contraction of the vessels of the surface & consequently threw the greatest quantity of fluids to the centre | Rx. | Wm. Cimot | 25 | Has got a Palry in consequence of hunting in white Lead. This man has han and affection of the bowels but slightly, not to that degree we should expect, the first symptoms that took place was costiness & griping, which continued 3 Days in this time he was suddenly seized in his Wrists He has been a worker in W. Lead all his life time & has been affected in his bowels three different times but never to such a degree as to effect his hands. This last attack he discovered the gripings more severe and immediately at the abatement of this the Paralitic affection of his Wrists took place One thing very singular in these cases is | Rx. Mist.
