Notebook contains kept by Benjamin Waterhouse (1754-1846) while he was attending medical lectures and studying at St. Thomas's Hospital in London, England, in 1775. Waterhouse's notes include lists of symptoms to be attended to in all cases, such as checking the pulse, eyes, tongue, and urine, as well as charts of patient case histories, with the time admitted, name, age, symptoms, and medicines administered.

... ... ... when the lead is by this means applied to the hands then bowels are for the most part afficted. Palsy says Dr F does not come on slowly when from the application of lead the first symptoms he had that took place was costioness & gripings which continued three days in which time he was siezed in his Wrists. Stimulants says Dr F are to be used rol. Alkal is most proper. Oil mixed with his purgatives are proper when the bowels are much affected. Rx Vol. Liniment

July 1st ... ... He has been pretty well till within this two days. Yesterday he was down in the squat & was taken suddenly with diziness in his head & a loss of sight but after geting in bed went off he now complains of great weakness and sorness he is ordered toleave off the use of his stimulating medicines till this is removed Rx Bol. June 8th John Davis 37 This man it in thought had water in his head he has that stupid look which commonly attends this complaint. is dozy & otherwise disordered when he stoops tho his stomach is not affected the complained at first of pain in his temples & is a little thick of hearing. The distinctions between spasmadic pain & water in the head is says B.F, very difficult- this man applied to a surgeon who gave him mercury which has hurt his bowels he has a spitting even now tho tis 8 weeks since he took mercury Gin necessary to take off the effects of the mercury first before any other medicine is given sursapaulla is thought most proper. Rx Decoct. Sarsap. Pulr. sarsap

June 8th Adam Dukins 44 A few days since was attack'd with a fever, about the evening paroxysm was taken pain & chillness, hise pulse is frequent about 96 a minute. he Says he was very dull & heavy for a week before he was taken in the come on chillness 2, or 3 times a day when that went off was very hot & Sweat profusly This is the 4th day of the disease on 2d day had such a prostration of strength as not to be able to stand. Here is a good case to see the beginning of fevers Rx. Vin. Emetic.
