Annual Meeting June 24th AD, 1862 The Board of Trustees of the Ohio University convened at its usual place of meeting in the University buildings at Nine O'clock AM June 24th AD 1862 Members Present, Rev Solomon Howard, D.D. President S. G. Brown, Calvary Morris, L. Jewett, John Welch, Horace Wilson, Amos Miller, George M Woodbridge, J.M. Lewitt, B.N. Spain and J.M. Dana, also elocutor M. The minutes of the last meeting were read.

On motion the board proceeded to the Election of Offices for the year commencing January 1st 1863 when the following persons were duly elected Secretary Joseph M. Dance Auditor John Brown Collector Frederick H. Stedman

The President made the following Report To the members of the Board of Trustees of the Ohio University Gentlemen. The past year has been one of trial, not only to the nation, but to the institutions of the County generally. We hare happy however to report that the year just closing will probably compare as to order, efficient study, and systematic appreciation with previous ones. The number of students enrolled is one hundred and twenty which when we take into consideration the many young men who have volunteered to serve their country in the Army as a large number, Between Seventy and Eighty young men as many as we can count, who could have been members of the University, entered the Army. Many of those doubtless with others who are kept out of college in their account, as soon as the war is over will return to fall with the University. You will be gratified to learn from the Report of the Finance Committee, that the condition of the University is financially sound, and healthy. The receipts of the past year have met the expenditures, and after meeting all claims, there will be found a balance in favor of the University at about seventy four hundred and thirty five dollars. Prof Young moved by patriotism and filled with love for his country in the hour of utter peril, resigned his professorship and entered the Army. The work of his department was divided up among the other members of the

faculty, who have since the resignation of Prof Young the beginning of the second term, in addition to their own work, performed the labor of that department. By this management with a similar and of the previous year there has been saved to the institution by the extra labor of the professors. One hundred and sixty five dollars and forty nine cents, The senior Class is comprised of nine persons who have all completed the entire course and are hereby recommended by the faculty to receive the degree of SB their names are as follows George E Blair, RR Birron, F.B. Buchwalter, Jefferson Booth, Jefferson B. Clayton, J.L. Halfield, H. C. Martin, William H. Scott, and Lucius Wright. The following persons are recommended for the degree of SM, J.M. Goodspeed, Allasi Davis, Hugh Boyd and F. R. Hanna of the Class of 1859. Melphn J.N. Pitchum and Jaime MacMurrey of the Class of 1858. The following Counties, Ross, Vinton, Franklin, Noble, Athens, Muskingum, Darke, Meigs, Morgan, Lawrence, Washington, Hocking and Columbiana have each according to the Regulation of the Board sent one young man free of discharge for tuition. The Library has received several volumes of public documents: these have mostly been sent by Hon. V.B. Horton our Representative in Congress. As the increase of the Legacy is of vital importance to the University, I would suggest that an armed office fire alarm be made of the amount missing from the fees of diplomas to the Legacy. The income from room units coming out fees and tuition, with scholarships and diplomas is about Eight-Hundred Dollars. We learn with pleasure that Prof Young will resign his position in the Army, and is willing to return to his college duties. I hope it may be the pleasure of the Board that Prof Young be offered to withdraw his resignation and return to his place in College. I herewith submit an account of the order decision by me in the Auditor according to the provisions of the Board. S. Howard On motion the same was referred to Mayor Brown Wilson of Leavitt, who reported as follows. The Committee to whom was referred the Annual Communication of the President and the subject of conferring Honorary Degrees beg leave to report by resolution as follows.
