Annual Report of the President To the members of the Board of Trustees of the Ohio University Gentlemen, We have in the Providence of God during the year lost by death three persons who had been for several years connected with the University. Hou S.B. Pruden who had been a faithful member of this Board about thrirteen years, and an earnest and devoted friend of the Institution died. 1864. Prof E.H. Guthreie who filled the chair of Ancient Languages in the absence of Prof Young in the Army and who had been a member of the University as a student and teacher nearly eight years died on the 29th day of January 1864. He was an amiable man, a good teacher, and faithful College Officer, S.B. Herming, a member of the Junior class, and who was a the time of his death employed as assistant in the Preparatory Department died on the 9th day of March 1864. He was a good teacher, and

one of our best students. With these exceptions the Officers and students have enjoyed good health. Prof Young having resigned his place in the Army returned at the beginning of the Spring term and resumed his duties in the Department of Languages. Rev UM H SCott was elected by the ACting Committee to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of Prof E.H. Guthrie. The number of students enrolled during the year is one hundred and thirty-nine, an increase of twenty eight over that of the preceding year. This is a larger number than that enrolled in any one year since the rebellion broke out. The call for the one hundred days men deranged the classes to some extent. This derangement was especially felt in the Senior class, three members of which left in obedience to this call. Fifteen Students in accordance with a previous resolution of the Board have been admitted free of charge for tuiton, from the following counties, fifteen in number. Vig: Athens, Dark, Fairfield, Franklin, Hocking, Gallia, Jackson, Meigs, Noble, Pickaway, Perry, Ross, Scioto, Vinton, and Washington. Nearly sixty volumes of books have been added to the Library of the College, worth some eighty- or ninety dollars. The income from the date of certificates of Scholarship, room rents, and contingent fees is about fourteen hundred dollars. ($1400) In view of the rise of prices and the increased expenses of the University, it may be well for the Board at its present session to consider the expediency of increasing the prices of Scholarships, tuition, and room rents. It is very necessary that the annual income should in some way be increased. At a meeting of the ACting Committee Sep 28th 1863 a committee was appointed to act in conjunction with a similar committee appointed by the Board of Trustees of Miami University or the subject of memoralizing the two State Universities, Ohio and Miami, the grant of land made by Congress of about six hundred thousand acres, for the purpose of establishing an agricultural College or Colleges, the Committee attended to the work assigned and a memorial was presented to the Legislation in which the subject was ably presented. The Legislation adjourned without making any definite disposition of the matter. It would be well for the Board to take some further action, such as their
