March 6th. Met and peformed, debate by Ben J Swelt on the affirmation, R P Narsum on the neg. Q. Does climate have any effect upon the intellectual power of men. Decided in the neg.

After prescribed exercises proceeded to business. Messrs Brooks & Hays were nominated & admitted as members of this society. Messrs Narsum & Haye assigned leaf of disimpion [?] which was granted. Voted that they receive the thanks of this Soc. for their [?]. Voted als that Charles Newcomb & Justian Edwards be expelled from this soc. for disorderly conduct. Adjourned.

Voted that the Secr. be authorised to assess and collect the tax to defray the expence of the Society, Adjourned. JG Durgee, Sec.

March 20th Met and performed. Debat by Hays on the af. Henry Tray on the neg. Que Is the present number of Colleges in our country better for our literature than a less number wont be. Decided in the af. Yays 15 Nays 14. After presented exersises [sic] proceeded to business. Voted that our respected Instructors Messrs Johnson & McLane be invited to attend the exersises of this Society on tuseday [sic] evening next. Voted also that Messrs Rogers & Reid be received as members of this society, Adjourned.

March 24th Met persuant to the resolution of 27th of Feby and performed. Debate by Holms on the af. and Dwinnel on the neg. Decided in the neg. Question aught slavery to be absolved forthwith; Voted to meet at 7 oclock tomorrow evening.

Voted that the late earator of the Philo Mathean Mr C Rich receive vote of thanks for his services. Voted that the librarian Mr Levi Rist receive vote of thanks for his services. Ditto as lamplighter. A polite invitation was then read from the Social Fraternity to the Philomathean Society to attend the exersises of that Society on Thursday evening March 28th at 1/2 past 6 oclock. that James Holms at his request be honorably dismissed from the society and receive a vote of the remarks for his service. Voted also that in case of absence of any member having a part in the exercisesthat he be fined the sum of twenty five cents unless a reasonable excuse be provided to the committy. Adjourned

Williams, J.P Langworthy F J Perkins, TE Ranney, JA Ranney, DG Estes Edmond [?], JP Bartlett, CC campbell were received as members to this Society by a unanimous vote & William Homes is admitted to the same. Voted that Jacob Harris at his request be honorably dismissed from this Society & receive a vote of thanks for his service. A Grover was nominated & chosen to fill the vacancy.

occasioned by the award of Joe Harris as com... [? Wilder] was nominated & chosen editor of the Philo Mathean to supply the place of Charles Rich resigned. Voted to purchase doz glass lamps for the use of the Society & that C Rich be appointed to purchase the same to assess & collect a tax to defray the expece of the same. Voted that hereafter a nomination for the choice of officer be considered as seporat and distinct from a motion.-- Adjourned.

(top of Pg. 7) Article 13th. When any question is before the Society, any member thereof, may move a previous question. "Whether that question (called the main question) shall now be first?" which motion being seconded, the dsicussion of the main ques-tion shall be suspended, and the debate con-fined to the previous question, which shall be in these words "Shall the main question be now first?" If it passes, in the affirmative, the main question shall be first immediately without amendment, alteration, or discussion. Article 14th. A member may appeal from the decision of the chair to the Society, and the appeal shall be considered as sustained when approved by two thirds of the members present. Article 15th. All motions made and seconded unless with-drawn shall be put to vote. Article 16th. All ^regular [inserted in blue ink] meetings of the Society shall be holden on Wednesday of each week, at such hour as the Society may direct. Article 17th. The Editor of the Mirror may criticise [sic] the performances of members, provided that in so doing he does not transgress Article 12th. of the By Laws of the Society and also the the columns of his paper are open for reply. Article 18th. Two thirds fo the members of the Society shall constitute a quorum, a less number may adjourn.
