Beard, Faywood, Ky., says: "Allow me to say that the sample bottle of Gude's Pepto-Mangan did me good service. Since receiving the same I have been prescribing it with results most gratifying. I regard it as one of the best tonics ever put before the medical profession."

Clear & cold with strong wind. I went to Brown's to see Ridgley again. called at [Hurlebaus?] and had a settlement in full with him in full. Afternoon Edwd went to "Norwood" and tuned their piano. home to supper. Lizzie Scott was here to see Dora this afternoon. After supper I went again to the stores.

Ther. 14° Sunday, January 5th Wind N.W. 5 Days Past Clear 360 To Come July 5, 1901. Dr. Wm. B. Whitaker, Chicago, Ill., says: "The original bottle of Gude's Pepto-Mangan received by me was for use in my own family. I have been prescribing this preparation for over four years and am well satisfied with the results obtained."

Another beautiful winter day. I went again to Chas Brown's to see the "Ridgley" young man and to meeting which was monthley meeting. I did not remain to the business meeting. Willie & Alice Peirce came to dine with us, driving in a new buggy Willie bought of John Whitesides in Brookeville yesterday. Afternoon cousin Hallie Bentley spent an hour or two here after Willie & Alice had gone. I went again to see Ridgley towards evening. Sent photographs of the "big chestnut tree" (on the Thomas place) to Lizzie Tyson by Alice & Willie.

Ther. 20° Monday, January 6th Wind S.E. 6 Days Past Clear & Cloudy 359 To Come Cases taken from the clinical report of Dr. Geo. M. Campbell, Professor of Histology, Halifax, N. C. appearing in Maritime Medical News, Halifax, Nova Scotia. CASE 1. - Miss O., a domestic, anæmic. Complained of weakness, giddiness, digestive disturbances, vomiting and constipation. The lips and conjunctivæ were very pale. Blood count was 1,600,000; hæmogobin 35 per cent. A laxative pill at night and Pepto-Mangan (Gude) in teaspoonful doses after meals were ordered. Four weeks later the blood count was 2,320,000 and hæmoglobin 40 per cent. Her condition steadily improved. A blood count five weeks later was 3,750,000 and hæmoglobin 60 per cent. She is still taking PeptoMangan (Gude) with the prospects of complete recovery.

I went to see young "Ridgley" again, both morning & afternoon. Sister Lizzie came and spent most of the day with us. Edwd was about home all day. Afternoon I went to Ashton & back. After supper I went to the village & to Fairalls office.

Ther. 26° Tuesday, January 7th Wind S.E. 7 Days Past Clear & Cloudy 358 To Come Dr. Geo. M. Campbell - Continued. CASE 2. - Mrs. P. was confined eighteen months ago; was very anæmic before confinement and lost considerable blood at the time. Inflammation developed about the uterus and she was in serious danger for some days. Three weeks after confinement an abscess formed near the right knee, which was opened and treated in the ordinary way. The day after the abscess was operated on, hemorrhage started from the incision, which was controlled only with considerable difficulty after she had become nearly bloodless. Tincture Ferri mur was first prescribed, but as the stomach was easily disturbed, it was changed to Gude's Pepto-Mangan. Convalescence was very slow, but steady. She is now fairly well and able to do her ordinary housework. No blood count was made in this case.

Clear and frosty this morning and until towards evening, when it clouded over and at bed time it is raining & sleeting. I went to see Dudley Ridgley again and to the store & P.O. Afternoon Edwd drove to Brookeville with the telephone horse to my phaeton to adjust a telephone. Mrs. "Dinwiddie" called to see Dora, who with Hannah Archer went to make some call's (at Wetherald's, Downey's, etc

Ther. 33° Wednesday, January 8th Wind N.E. 8 Days Past Clear & Cloudy 357 To Come Dr. Geo. M. Campbell - Continued. CASE 3. - Miss R., a laundry girl, anæmic, complained of shortness of breath with pain in left side, slight cough and distress after eating. Examination of chest revealed no trouble in the lungs. Pains in side evidently neuralgic. Blood count 3,200,000; hæmoglobin 60 per cent. Prescribed Pepto-Mangan (Gude), with a laxative pill at night, and the side to be painted with tincture of iodine. Saw her several times in the course of three months. Her improvement was steady and satisfactory. The color improved, appetite increased, and pains left her side. Only one blood count was made.

It has not been cold enough to freeze at any time today. I went to Brown's to see young "Ridgley" again. he is so much improved I shall not see him professionally again unless called in. Afternoon C.T. Porter called to see me about Bro Richd's place opposite "Riverside." Dora & Hannah Archer went next door to tea & Edwd went after supper. He went (on bicycle) to "Cottage" this morning to adjust telephone. I went to store & P.O. before & after noon & again after supper & to Fairall's office.

Ther. 26° Thursday, January 9th Wind N.E. 8 Days Past 357 To Come Dr. Geo. M. Campbell - Continued. CASE 4. - Mr. D., a business man, afflicted with chronic Bright's disease. Has had uræmic convulsions on three different occasions within the last three years; none, however, during the past twelve months. He is now able to attend to his business. There is no œdema, color fairly good and only an occasional headache. Practically the treatment has been restricted diet, salines in the morning to keep the bowels free, and Pepto-Mangan (Gude) in dessert-spoonful doses thrice daily after food. The Pepto-Mangan (Gude) agrees with his stomach and aids his digestion. No blood count has been made in his case.

Cloudy I went to the store & P.O. before and after noon. Edwd went over to Unity after dinner to mend a break in the telephone wires using the telephone horse & my phaeton. Willie and Fanny came and Willie went with Edwd to help him & Fanny drove home by herself. Old ["Mele"?] worked at wood pile all day. H's wash woman was here this morning.

She was also troubled with frequent vomiting and could not do the slightest kind of work. At times her stomach could not retain even milk and lime water. Previously she had taken Blaud's pills and other combinations of iron which did no perceptible good and interfered with digestion. The blood count at first was shown to be 2,100,000 and hæmoglobin 40 per cent. She was then

It has been cloudy but warm enough to be pleasant all day. I went to store & P.O. morning & afternoon and again after supper. Edwd did some work at "Central" for the Phone Co. Cousin Hannah Archer left for Washington in the 2 oclk afternoon stage. Lizzie Scott was here to see Dora this afternoon. After supper Edwd went down to "Cloverley."

Ther. Saturday, January 11th Wind N.W. 11 Days Past Cloudy & Clearing 354 To Come Dr. Geo. M. Campbell - Continued. put on Pepto-Mangan and three weeks later the blood count was 3,500,000 and hæmoglobin 50 per cent. Before the second count was made she was admitted to the Victoria General Hospital under the care of Dr. M. A. B. Smith, who continued Pepto-Mangan. The general improvement in color, strength, and increase in flesh after a month's treatment was really remarkable, and astonished not only herself but her friends.

Edwd went with telephone horse and wagon to beyond Norbeck, was gone all day. I fixed the stove pipe crock & pipe in our room. Settled with Chas. W Brown. Went to Ashton & back. Willie was here this afternoon. I was called to see Mrs. "Oldfield." It grew cold about noon with strong N.W. wind. Ther. 24° Sunday, January 12th Wind N.W. 12 Days Past Cloudy 353 To Come ANAEMIA is the sneak thief of all diseases. It steals on insidiously, frequently carrying in its wak the beginning of disease of more serious import. "Oppose beginnings," is an old and true proverb. Pepto-Mangan (Gude), by furnishing the blood with an immediately absorbable combination of organic iron and manganese, increases the oxygen and hæmoglobin-carrying power of the red corpuscles, and thus nourishes all the tissues of the body. It should be employed in cases of anæmia, chloranæmia, chlorosis, rhachitis, neurasthenia, or in blood impoverishment from any cause. To assure proper filling of prescriptions, order Pepto-Mangan (Gude) in original bottles ([?] xi.). It's never sold in bulk.

Cloudy & disagreeable, with "raw" wind all day. I went to meeting & heard an excellent sermon from Edwd Farquhar. Afternoon Walter Iddings and wife called & spent an hour or so with us, they having driven up from Kensington to "Riverside" last night & will spend tonight there again returning to Washington tomorrow morning. After supper I walked up to the toll house.

Ther. 22° Monday, January 13th Wind N.W. 13 Days Past Clear 352 To Come July 4, 1901 Dr. W. H. Knevitt, Rutherford, N. J., says: "I received the bottle of Gude's Pepto-Mangan, and was very much pleased with the results I had from it. I can recommend and prescribe it with better results than any other preparation on the market."

Still windy & blustering. I went to Insurance Office & paid our tax for insurance. Also to store & P.O. and to mill. Afternoon Edwd went to "Willow Grove &c. " on tellephone work. Hallie Bentley & a little "Dinwiddie" girl were here to see Dora and Miss Mary Fowler also here. I went [deary?] to James Hill's to see "Eliza" in consultation with Dr. Farquhar and rode back with him to our gate.
