Then to Hamburger Mary's. I had a huge omelette. When we returned I went to the phone + called Stanford School of Engineering and found out I'd been "cleared," put on the graduation list for June. I was so happy. I called Mark, and we agreed to meet later that day. I was ready to leave the dumpy hotel at Washburn + Mission and head back. I was still pretty woozy. I decided to take a trip on Bart and went out to Concord and back. It was fun. By then it was late Friday afternoon so I went to Sutter's Mill of course and met a guy who'd seen me at the Rendezvous. It really gets around I thought. Well... I only drank Seven Ups there. I was recovering still. I met Mark for dinner, we went to Perry's on Union Street. Mark does have class, a lot in fact. Then we went to "The City" and I came to the realization that Mark is just going to be a good good friend. There was a guy there I could not take my eyes off of. Mark + I then went home, slept and got up for breakfast and lunch and then I took the train back, exercised at

the spa, and came home, had dinner at Coffee Plus, went home, called a few friends, and went to bed. I got up this morning, had breakfast at Holiday Inn, went to return books to Layne, started this, + here I am (Sunday).

So this last quarter has been hard work that showed me how very hard I can work. My horoscope says that much money can be gained by hard work of the next nine months. I am willing. I also had the opportunity of having an apt, though very plastic, living by myself, not so fun, and decorating it, not so great either. Doing it with a friend next time will be fun, I hope.

I also learned that even if I work my tail off here I don't do well. I am basically unhappy at Stanford, so I would bet that my formal education is ending here. No master in

engineering since it is just specialized stuff, nor in CS, as I know it or can learn it, nor in business, as I have no interest there, nor a JD, as I really can't read all that well. My best, happiest successes have been in the open business world, and I hope to continue that. I don't really know with whom or in what capacity. Undoubtedly, Microsoft is top choice as it is new and it will produce much, and my longest known friends work there. Bill + I have similar interestes not had by Paul, just as B+P do and not me. So I don't think it will be too cold a territory. I pray it won't be.

Romanticall, I want to move to the city to be able to frequent bars and find the man I love and will love for some time. I hope to be with good friends + working hard while doing so. SF is the place to find the right guy so I hope it will happen; we'll see.

From here on I wish to begin day by day accounting of my life or at least more frequent accounts. But first a Stanford autobiography.

Chapter V A college autobiography (written two days after being informed of my completing req'ts for grad'n. SUNDAY)

My freshman year was spent at Oregon State University where I earned a 4.0 gpa majoring in electrical engineering. There I joined the Pi Kappa Phi Social Fraternity and was house scholarship chairman and representative of our house to the Thames, an OSU interfraternity group. I was one of 25, of the 4000 freshmen who received an award for scholarship and leadership in the University and became a member of Phi Eta Sigma, a national freshman honor society. I attended Campus Crusade for Christ's Leadership Training Class during my year at OSU.

It was a good year, but I didn't really feel that I fit in very well because I did so well academically and was so much more active on campus than most Oregon Staters and yet still had an easy time of it. Though the times were interesting and eventually truly enjoyable, there was unpleasant

dissonance with my prep school background. I'd become very intrigued by Stanford and applied there.

The summer after my freshman year I attended Explo '72, a one-week convention of college-age Christians in Dallas, Texas and then went to work for the PECO Manufacturing Company, Inc. in Portland, Oregon as an information system designer. I helped to design the flow of paper and structure of responsibilities for the automated intracompany communication system they were creating, and aided in developing the required computer software and paper forms. This included purchase order and invoice processing, and a materials control system.

I also spent some time improving a computer editing system called Editx - which I began creating during senior year in high school. Information Sciences, of Portland, Oregon, a computer services company, had given me some educational free time on their
