Showery in the morning, but poured with rain all the afternoon and all night. The river close to this house has not risen yet, but the others must be flooded by this time.
[Friday 23]
It poured all last night; and it is still raining this morning, rained hard all the afternoon, but only slightly through the night. The new gin made Topsey (an old one) jealous, & the latter threw a fire-stick at her & said she would kill her. The stick flew past Mrs. Shadforth's face, so Madame Topsey got a thrashing.

Bella, the new gin decamped in the night; whether it was because of Topsey's threat to kill her, or discontent at this life we don't know. They tracked her as far as the O'Shanassy but that river is a "banker", so they could not go after her any further. It rained a little this morning, but all the afternoon it has been fine. A few showers have fallen this evening. There is no mail expected for 2 months on account of the floods.
