Office of the Light House Engineer Thirteenth District Portland, Oregon, August 5, 1871

Sir:

I have the honor to submit the following Report of Light House Operations for July, 1871. Work done on new Light House at Yaquina Bay, Oregon. Labor furnished by Mr. Ben Simpson per contract dated June 19, 1871.

Mason's work.

Two coats of plaster completed and one third of last coat finished. Hearths laid.

Carpenter's work.

Picket fence, cellar stairs, sink in kitchen completed. Blinds fitted and hung. Doors and windows cased. Closets, half of work done.

Painting work.

Two coats put on outside. Woodshed, house and picket fence.

Laborers work.

Attending masons and jobbing.

Work to be done at Yaquina L.H. in August 1871.

Last coat of plaster to be completed. Base to be put down. Mouldings placed on doors, windows and base. Mantels to be set. Doors to fit and hang. Closets, pantry, service room, storerooms and oilroom to fix up. Stair rails to hang. Painting outside of house. Roof and fence to be completed. Inside painting to be commenced. All work to be completed except some painting inside and work about the tower.

The deck plate, lantern lens, etc. will not reach Yaquina before the 15 of September and making allowance for contrary winds the Light House will be completed about the 15th of October.

Work done at Cape Hancock Light Station. Cape Disappointment W.T. Consequent upon damage done July 12 by firing in vicinity of 15 inch gun.

July 27. Commenced new house and frame for fog bell to be as follows: bell house to be 10 feet square with 8 feet high walls, balloon frame, weather boarded and painted white. Bell frame to be 8 1/2 feet high, from the house floor and made of 10 inch square timber. Will be completed about the 3d of August

Ack. (acknowledged) You have not heretofore reported the circumstances of the damage to the fog bell structure at Cape Disappointment, which would seem to be entirely unnecessary.

If the damage was caused by carelessness in firing, it should have been made good ??? Please to make full report concerning it. - E
