1853 May 31st going to finish weeding Corn at Mountain Mrs Coleman 2 Sows has got 16th Pigs the little sow has 9 the other 7. very Small ones ¬–

June 1st Send for Doct Andrew Thompson yesterday to see Cate who has the mumphs Bad,- Jordan Plowing Hester to day working in Garden triming cotton, weeding corn we are all getting wood this morning – cloudy & like for Rain finished Plowing fresh field at mountain last week & finished weeding there yesterday also Hilling 2nd yrs Tobacco Land Henry started to Lynchg 30th monday morning with a Hhd of Second rate Tobacco also Mrs McCullockswaggon & got back wednesday before night, broke his waggon Tongue & made another at Scags

4th June we have been weeding & Plowing corn Johns’s field this week 4 Plows since Henry got from Lynchg dry & warm this week Young Pink had a Bull calf this week at stony, put Red in Pasture to have a calf

5. went to Burial of Miss Julia Danl this day Cate sick with mumphs yet Jacob went to FW

6th Plowing & weeding far End of Johns’s field nearly over once Plowing - cloudy & like for rain this morning - warm weather

10 we have been planting Tobacco 2 days & have finished planting all but a little corner of the Lot Turned off very cool & dry Beded & Planted Lot Lot yesterday Plowed Cotton Potatoes etc Patch & Cotton Patch Plowing corn by Johns Spring & then Gaunoed this morning 4 Plows runing - —Buck little Henry Jerry Smith & Fannie has measles Bad.

15. weeding corn on Johns branch & Plowing Sheared Sheep this week, fixed bridge on Road yesterday.

1853 June 15 Expect to begin to Lay by corn this day sometimes, Henry halling wood this morning working out Peas etc to day — Fannie Here

16th Finished weeding Corn this day & worked Peas etc etc Cotton & all done & began to work new ground Tobacco Laying by mountain field Corn

17. Laying by mountain field corn choping in new ground Tobacco Dry & Hot weather fannie & Jacob gone

18- Finished Lying by mountain field with Plows Choping out new ground Tobacco. no Rain last evening – fine rain at Mrs Hunts, Laying by Corn in Johns’s field,Henry is gone to Mill 8 Bus Corn Lila had a Girl child 16th June 1853 Fed sick Sallie claiborne & milly ann Ben has measles –– Jordan Sandy Lowry abram Fed Cate Jacob Sallie & Clem has had mumphs & Jerry & perhaps some others.

21st began to Cut wheat in Lot - choped over mountain field Corn & now following Plows Laying by - in Johns s field Sandy & Pallor has measles, going to finish shearing sheep mark etc this morning Jordan & Lowry also in house measles this evening & with Federick & Lila, 9 down in the house at this time & Kitty has mumphs tho out

22nd We are cutting wheat next to or= chard & lot to day Abraham Crews helping & still dry & hot, oat drying up very much & Tobacco plants in the Beds, what we have have planted missing very much 4 of our plant Beds look well last week tho they may have Dyed since at mountain 2 in new new ground look well one is gone

23rd June1853 Federick Out this morning cutting our Fresh ground wheat to day nearly done in Lot cut some in Lot this morning, cloudy & Hot Abraham Crews cutting to day 2nd Day

24th Cutting wheat in fresh ground at mountain

25th Cutting at home next to middle barn & finished in evening, We have hired abram Crews 3 days in Harvest @ 3/- & David Millers young Charles a little over 1½ days,- & Jacob has cut nearly all Harvest ever since last say 3½ or 4 daysmonday Jordan Sandy & Lowry had measles this week & clai too tho he got out this morning, no rain yet very & cool this morning tho the first of this was very Hot weat. Cate home yesterday from Doct Thompson I sent for her Nannie & Cate gone to David P. Millers this evening

29th very Hot & Dry weather, looks like the sun will search every thing on the ground We are Cutting Our Oats this week had Mr McHaneys Phil 2 Days,- nearly done Cutting out oats got some to cut at Mr Neals

July 2nd Halling up wheat yesterday & to day halling now from fresh ground weeding Second years Tobacco Land Jordan & sandy Mrs McCullock Died thisLaying by Corn in Johns s field - very dry & tremendous Hot -

3rd July Mrs McCullock Died this day about 3 Oclock Cate gone to Mr F. this day

4 Mrs McCullocks Funeral Preached by Mr Hurt great many People buri[e]d about 5 Oclock this day

5 Halling up wheat & choping in Tobacco above House fresh ground

1853 July 5th Jacob & Jordan Plowing

6th Same work Finished stacking wheat & Rye, & working in 3rd yrs Tobacco ground Haling up & stacking Oats. I & Jordan Laying by Corn in Johns’s field very dry & hot, yet no Rain to wet much for 6 or 8 weeks Nannie gone to see Mrs McCullocks Hesters shoe lost last Saturday been on her about a week, Fair & Hot

7th Still dry & Hot put in fine Tobacco to prize - Put out all in prize Barn to Sun Plowing in Johns’s field 2 Plows Henry stacking Oats, working 3rd yrs Tobacco, Jerry started to School - this morning clear & no for Rainprospect

12 Halled up Tobacco out of new Barn back of Garden & prizing & assorted, still dry tho like for rain this morning - a little Cooler Finished yesterday Halling up our Oats

13. Worked Out Garden Hilled Sweet Potatoes Plowed Cotton & Hilled that up gathering clover seed, Laying by Corn in Johns s field

19 Finished Plowing Corn, Plowing Tobacco

20 Plowing Tobacco assorting Tobacco Hilling up new ground Tobacco. Rains commencing coming this day - & we commenced planting Tobacco last Saturday

21st This day & yesterday we replanted all Our Crop & whole planted a little of the Lot, Still cloudy & Raining Fed shoemaking

25th Sent Fed to Millers Mill 5 Bus wheat for flour 7 Bushels corn for meal Plowing Mr Neals corn to day Plowing Tobacco Prizing Tobacco, silling up Hhd etc, fair fine weather

26 Plowing & Hilling up Irish Potatoes working Tobacco etc etc

1853 July 26 Fixing waggon off to Lynchg – – Sent by waggon to Lynchg 2 Bags wool to Card to Mr Cobbs, weighing 1 Bag weighing 12 lbs fine 1 Do 27½ lbs Grass, & 10 Doz Eggs for Henry to Sell prizing another Hhd to day working & Hilling up new ground Tobacco - showery warm weather Cate started to Lynchg, lent her xx $

30. waggon got back last Evening in 3 days from Lynchg cloudy every day this week Hilled up new ground & weeding down 2nd years ground, wormed Tobacco this morning Rained all night last night Still cloudy. we are firing Tobacco Haling heaves Shrubing & Cutting & butting House Logs for barn, Lost my Bull & young Pink lately & one of young steers Suk one sick last week & we gave it a dose of Castor Oil & it got well, I am now going to try it with Buck my young steer – cleared off this evening

31st Beautifull morning clear & fine weather Henry sick yesterday & to day

augt 1st worked Celam to Buggy made Hog pen Plowed & worked Lot Tobacco put out all of Our Tobacco this morning

2 Put Tobacco in house prizing & finished about this 3rd augt & started the waggon to Lynchg cutting house Logs Finished working out Fresh ground Tobacco & Grubbing in fresh field Fine rain the day we started to Lynchg

6 got back Safe & sound Sold Tobacco for $7½ . 10½ . & 1375 but weighed light cloudy & like for Rain. top over new ground Tobacco last wednesday
