The Suffolk Medical Society records, 1785-1789 (inclusive), consist of: a 1785 manuscript proposing the formation of the society; 1788-1789 record of meetings; 1787-1788 records of transactions of a council of the society; records of votes and proceedings dated from 1785 to 1789; several manuscripts and drafts of the rules and orders of the society established in 1785 at a meeting in Dedham, Massachusetts; and an undated manuscript label bearing the collection title.

9. There shall be two Stated meetings of the Association annually. Viz on the first mondday in May, and on the first monday in October; Preceeding which there shall if necessary be a meeting of the Council. The time and place to be appointed by the President & the time of day & place of the future meeting of the Association shall be agreed upon previous to the close of each meeting. besides the stated there may be occasional meetings called by the President with advice of the Council, whenever the Interest of the Association shall in their Opinion require it, or when there to requested in writing by any Five members of the Association, the time and place of such meeting to be signified to the Secretary, that he may give at least Seven days notice thereof to the members.

10. each member shall attend if convenient at every meeting & whilst the meeting is open, shall Observe due order and shall not_ Interrupt any member when Speaking, nor speak more than twice to any one_ Questions without leave Obtained from the meeting & when speaking shall address_ himself to the President.

11. And it shall be the duty of each member to promote the Interests of the Association to advance its Honor and reputation and to conduct towards his Brethren in the medical line with candour, to Support the Character of each member of the Associaiton as far as_ Justice & propriety will admit, to cultivate Harmony and Friendship among its members and others in the Profession, & by every laudable means to Conciliate the affections of People, & ever esteem it dishonourable to advance his own reputation on the_ ruin of another.

12._ Previous to the admission of any new– member; a proposal of admission in writing shall be made to the Secretary, who shall lay_ the same before the Council, and if by them approved of, the Secretary at the next meeting of the Association shall publish it and_ at any Subsequent meeting he may be voted in by written votes, provided there be a Majority of Votes in his Favor, & Seven Members be _ present._ And it shall be the duty of each _ member not to reveal the persons Names_ Proposed to be admitted, to any Person other than to a member of the Society, nor any doings that shall be had thereon, unless the proposed person shall Finally abtain admission._

13._ And if any member should notoriously_ disgrace himself by Flagrant abuses of his moral Powers, he may upon conviction thereof before the whole Association, be expelled, provided, there be a Unanimous vote against him.–

Voted _at the last mentioned time & place, Unanimous, 2. _to accept the report of their Committee chosen May_1786_ for the purpose of recommending a more Eligible mode of educating Pupils in the_ Practice of Physic-the committee [carroted above] chosen were Mels, JerauloShute & Molbrook, & reported as follows_

Report of a Committee of a Medical Association in the Courtesy of Suffolk, chosen May_1786_for the purpose of recommending a more regular & Eligible method of educating Pupils in the practice of Physic whereby they may endeavour that Students in Medicine for the future should have in some degree the hecafiany[?]_ advantages to qualify them for the more respectable establishment of their Profession, and as those_ laudable Qualifications are the only Bases that will ever give usefulness & eminence to the Honest Physician, and on the Contrary will forever end to Subvert_ the wickedness of Quackery & Empiricism which we have too much reason to lament has been_ malevolent [?] among us,_The Committee therefore beg leave to propose the following_ Rules & regulations,_

That there be annually paid by each member of this association six shillings, to be appropriated for the benefit of [?] association as they may judge necessary & most advantageous , & that the first payment be made at their semiannual meeting in May next.

3. That the next meeting be at Ames' Tavern Dedham on [?] Monday in [?] at 10 o'clock A.M.

At a meeting of the Suffolk Medical Association at Ames's Tavern in Dedham on Monday May [?] 1788. ~ Members present doctors Tufts, Shipps, [?], Shepard & Draper.

Voted to adjourn the said meeting unto the first Monday in October next, then to meet at [?] Hall in Dorchester at 10 o'clock A.M. & it was accordingly adjourned.
