Even though Boom is busy, there are always lots of [yellow]trolls, chicken, and rich old grey daddies[/yellow] around. That really reduces the impact that place can have. And it's really tough to get to know someone there because the music is so loud, and the atmosphere is pure DISTRACTION.

7-9 Goto Party at 678 Cliff near Las Brises. Meet a fun group mostly from SF. Blond with turquoise neck kerchief named [yellow]Calvin Marcus.[/yellow] (Neiman Marus). They made me drive their limo because I was they only sober one, and made me go through Jack in the Box! They were fun. "Jump" was playing at full blast as we sat at the ordering station. Then we decided not to buy anything but went through the pickup window anyway, and waved + blow kisses! [margin]u-turns in the SS Town car[/margin]

9-10 Drink at Boom.

10-11 Dinner at Tortilla Flats.

11-12 Walk on Beach.

12-2 Boom. Cape Codders. Packed. [yellow]Glad I was not alone![/yellow]

2-4 Take Calvin home + [ploy?] straight buddies + bears.

MONDAY, LABOR DAY

12:15 Done with Good Earth Breakfast Calvin packs up + leaves. Jorge calls. Think.

Comments: LA is fun, but I need [yellow]romance, and that requires character.[/yellow] It just isn't in LA much. The Croft/Sawyer/Cram group is ok, but its definitely not Seattle.

Boy, I've lived a variogated life. Preppy, ABQ, Seattle, Harvard, Orange County, ----

I am very glad I had OC to work in, and I get a lot done. It was hot, especially the first summer with Jorge, Russel + the Major's group. But I [yellow]couldn't live here now,[/yellow] although I feel good here, [yellow]very good, this morning.[/yellow] I'm a city boy, but I can't do [yellow]LA.[/yellow] It's not OC, [yellow]not open, not pretty,[/yellow] not generally rich + healthy.

1:00 So it's been fun enough weekdn, and now what should I do?

Could do beach, but Boom will be boring afterward, and I'm not up for drinking. And I don't want [yellow]to leave MAC in hot car that long.[/yellow]

I can't see staying for another week. Being in LA this weekend is not attractive to me. Laguna

would be boring this weekend, as it always is the weekend after holiday. And where would I stay in LA? Jorge's is too small. Dick + Pat is out. Rik Callista I don't know well enough, certainly not to stay several days.

So I will leave tomorrow evening, as my ticket shows now.

LA is not that attractive to me. [yellow]So many people without character,[/yellow] dull, no fun outfits, no romantic geography, no boat cruises. [yellow]Leave it behind.[/yellow] But this was a fun way to spend Labor Day weekend Saturday + Sunday. (Don't count day in LA. It was a lesson.)

1:15 Pack up + check out... Call Rik Callista

2:00 On my Way to LA up I5

3:00 Look around [yellow]Silver Lake[/yellow] + try Jorge. Not at home. Drive up Sunset to Edgemont + see [yellow]Los Feliz.[/yellow] North of Franklin, between Normandie + Western [yellow]is nice.[/yellow] But to get to gym you have to go through [yellow]scum.[/yellow] Hacky or bland architecture poor blacks, spanish, ugly traffic. Spanish billboards, McDonald's + its pathetic patrons on La Brea. It feels very uncomfortable to me.

4:00 Stop at McD for snack. Same old place w/pathetic clientele.

I [yellow]HATE HOLLYWOOD.[/yellow]

[yellow]What advantage does SF have over LA?[/yellow] I prefer Russian River to Laguna Fife's + Drumms + cocktails + music + floating on pool + pretty drive I preferr Muscle Sys to Jim Morris. Warm, friendly, spacious, colorful I prefer Tracadero to Studio One [comment][yellow]Important for visiting, but not for living there [9/9/85][/yellow] KEY[/comment] My industry is close to SF. I could have house with view of rolling hills + Bay + ships More densely packed = easier to see people Fewer phony actors/models/waiters People have more character [margin]?[/margin] There are parks + pretty places to drink to on weekends There skiing + hiking

[yellow]What does LA have over SF? Sun [comment]Maybe too much. Not enough introspection[/comment] + Muscles [comment]Should not be unique to LA.[/comment] + parking spots

But do the Sun + blandness of LA take its toll on the minds of people here? It is so flat. There are no views. It's a boring place to be by oneself! (As I was in 1977.) Flatness didn't bother me in ABQ because you could get out easily

4) No style in the gym [comment]TRUE[/comment]

5/89 Each city has advantages and some aspects which are completably intolerable so I had to decide which was best for me

[yellow]WHAT IS THE PROBLEM IN LA?[/yellow]

1) BLAND + TACKY A LOT

2) NOT ROMANTIC/NOT INSPIRED

3) Lack of character in people

[comment]9/9/85: Stay West of La Brea! And try to be more social![/comment]

[comment]or "lighten up" as Farrel told me in Aug '86 (5/89)[/comment]

[YELLOW]WHAT IS THE PROBLEM IN SF?[/YELLOW]

1) SO DENSELY POPULATED

2) FEELS CLOSTROPHOBIC WHEN FOGGY/CLOUDY

3) NOT MANY REALLY ATTRACTIVE GUYS. LOTSA TROLLS.

[MARGIN]TRUE[/MARGIN]

5:30 Go to Tower Record for Julie Brown "Home Coming Queen's got a gun"

6:00 Call Rik C. Not home. Drive some more
