TUESDAY, SEPT 4

9:00 Go to [yellow]Gym[/yellow] just as if I lived here. It's [yellow]not very friendly[/yellow] again, but that's general: It seems like most people there don't know each other. [margin]I get attention but not friendship or smile.[/margin] And MUSIC is too loud. I like casually [yellow]chatting at[/yellow]the gym. That's one of the best places to make friends. But Music is just a little too loud.

[yellow]I pulled a muscle in[/yellow] my back ~ 10:30 So I went to pool to rest. Very [yellow]high temperature[/yellow] today. Uncomfortable. I sat in the shade + finished Mozart. Very sad ending. No great funeral.

Back to work out at 12:00. Do light weights + no back exercises. Lunch at 1:00, then home.

[margin]And LA is body builders, whom I don't like, so why like LA?[/margin]

Even if I met someone here, what would I do with him? [comment]COULDN'T HAVE LOVER IN LA.[/comment] Not much of a season for fireplaces; when it's cold + cloudy, LA is awful. I DON'T LIKE GETTING AROUND IN L.A. SO UNINSPIRING. [COMMENT]VERY LITTLE SOLEMN WEATHER[/COMMENT] [yellow]Nothing like Vol. Park, the waterfront, or lakes to go + take walks by.[/yellow] No (night) skiing.

TO WRAP UP THIS TRIP:

[yellow]What makes these trips?[/yellow] It's just been for the purpose of doing gay resorts in California. It's not intense like Fire Island, but pleasant, and not boring. [yellow]But I don't get to see these people I meet again, and[/yellow] even if I do, I can't have a relationship, being so far away.

[yellow]So I should settle on one place.[/yellow] I PICK SF because its closer to Seattle, and it seems I may make some friends there. And I like N. Cal for beaches, forests, mountains, quiet, and for people with more character than LA...

Other [yellow] reasons to pick one place.

To get a place to stay each time.

To have a standard car to drive

[yellow]To focus energy[/yellow]

But I don't love SF. It'll just be a place to go visit in a month + maybe have enjoy friends. We'll see

Maybe NYC? Character! Anyway [yellow]NYC is done...[/yellow]

5-7 Return to Airport thinking

1) It was just a 2 1/2 day Holiday starting Sat afternoon, going to Mon Eve, Friday + Tuesday was a mistake, and today I [yellow]tried to see what living in LA would be like[/yellow]

a) gym is wierd in morning sin it's not earthy, but tries to be chic, has image of exciting, but isn't Tues Morn.

b) Where to eat dinners.

c) [yellow]No Parks, lakes, hills, mountains to visit at a moments notice[/yellow]

d) tried to [yellow]work[/yellow] in afternoon, but it was [yellow]so hot[/yellow] and there's so little hope of finding LA acceptable

2) [yellow]LA is so small. Only part of interest is West Hollywood, Melrose, Hancock Park, Westwood, and lower Beverly Hills.[/yellow] Los Feliz is excluded since you have to go through Hollywood to get ot it. Same for Silverlake, and its not so great even of itself.

7:00 Leave for SEA.

Palm Springs/Phoenix/San Diego

Nov 1984

Fri-Sun were fun days, just getting out of Seattle and into LA sunshine, exercising, dining with Jorge, and driving to Palm Springs. Meeting Steve Moore + doing Hoyd + Lane Saturday, and moving to Rancho Las Palmas Sunday. Great!

Mon+Tues I discovered some very useful design assumptions for Personal Accountant

Wednesday Morning I closed out my Palm Springs experience, citing it as too small to live in, and too resortlike, Country Club this + that. And too many old people. Only 70,000 in all. Just 3 small bars, and no weekday lightlife.

Wednesday Aft-Thursday. Check out Phoenix + Tucson, to see if they could be a good winter retreat. But its flatter than ABQ, no hot gym/hot men, too gridlike/characterless, no hills or water, not in Pacific Time zone + TV shows hour earlier, no gay neighborhood or community, no gay pride parade

Friday - drive to San Diego + check it out. thinking all the way: what to do next? Palm Springs didn't feel attractive when I arrived at lunchtime, and LA was definitely out, so San Diego was all that's left.

Saturday - spend part of day with Don Reese, and go to Holiday Health Spa. Very Californian. Tired afterwards due to cold, so I just slept

Sunday - return Car to LAX + fly home + have birthday dinner with Mom + Dad.

I conclude that San Diego will by place in the sun during the winter, and that [yellow]I didn't like it last summer because I"d normally not need it in the summer when Seattle is sufficient + great. I didn't need it the first two winters I lived here in Seattle, nor did I need it last summer, but now that it's winter #3, I've realized I can use it!
