Another oratorical contest but this time I was only a

hearer. There were good speeches, especially Roberts who won & Funk spoke better than I ever heard him before. Roberts subject was "Shall our Laurels wither." I learned from him to put pathetic feeling incidents in your speech which will

give rise to effective gestures. Kid McCoy spoke on Woman and he was fairly good, but like me labors under the difficulty of a bad voice. He said that our sweethearts do not always become our wives, & our wives do not always

remain our sweethearts. That we treat our sweethearts with ice cream, cake & our wives with indifference. The kid took a drink of water after each paragraph and I was surprised at the capacity he had for his size.
