Tuesday Oct 8. Rainy & squally weather, wind veering from South to S.W. In P.M. I use reefed Topsails & courses. In eve I wind hauled to N.W. & heavy sea making. Shook our reef from Fore & Main Topsails & Foresail 4 Days out

Wednesday Oct 19. Few cold weather with NW. wind. Set F. Gal. sails over single reefer Topsails. Setting up Fore & main backstays. our moderates. Set all sail to Topmast Stud sail. In night wind hauls ahead again

Boston towards Savannah Ga Ship "Garnet" Capt Jno Bradford Took in Studsail braced sharp by the wind 5 days out

Thursday Oct 20, 1859 Strong breezes from from West. At 9 AM took in Royals + Miz. T Gal sail. Fine clear weather. At 6 PM wind hauled more to North + increases. Checked in the yards + handed T. Gal Sails - put two reefs in Topsails. Very strong gales. Course W.S.W Through night same with cold weather 6 Days out

Friday Oct 21 Begins with strong gales from N. W. At 11 AM Shook reefs from Topsails - Set Fore + Main T Gal sails. At Meridian spoke two or three Charleston Pilots. Made land off Charleston at 10 AM. At 6 PM set Royals Night fine light breeze 7 Days out

Saturday Oct 22 Fine warm weather with all sail set. At 2 Am made Light ship off

Savannah River Lying with Main yard aback till 4 AM. when filled away to N.& E. At 8 AM. took Pilot. All day working up to Savannah & at 8 1/2 PM came to Anchor in River opposite City & hauled alongside the Levee. Got fast at 9 1/2 o'clock. Sails furled, & then went up town a little while. 8 Days from Boston Sunday Oct 23. 1859 In morning washed decks and cleared up. In forenoon recd letters from R.W. Bartlell. Annie M. Case & Henrietta. I love to receive letters especially from the last. Attended Presbyterian Ch. In PM on board ship writing to Mother & Henrietta. In evy at African Ch with Jas L. Morse who arrd today on Steamship "Montgomery"

Monday Oct 24. "Turned to" at 6 AM. Pegged in Lift boom, Cockbilled yards & got hatches clear Also catered Starboard anchor. The weather

Savannah, Ga. Ship Garnet.

The weather is delightful. Warm & pleasant as A June morning at home. Yesterday morning had a pleasant walk in the Parks outside the city. Everything is beautiful. Our ship I think compares favorably with any in Port, but requires much labor as every new ship does. In eveg up town with Frank Brackett. Saw Jas Morse Recd letter from home

Tuesday Oct 25. 1859 Very pleasant & warm. Employed discharging ballast into Ship "Medalion & on Leon. Getting ship ready for cargo. Shall soon haul to our loading berth. Eveg on board Montgomery & up town.

Wednesday Oct 26. At work all day on ballast Hard work & hot weather.

Thursday Oct 27 Fine weather. At 8 AM hauled

to our loading berth at Lower Cot. Press. Our Consigners here are Andrew Low & Co. and in Lpool Belt. English & Brandon. Have to lay "sparred off" on a/c of the shoal water next to Levee. In eveg on board writing to Robert, Alex, Mother & Daniel. Am not quite well. Think it is drinking river water

Friday Oct 28. 1859 Cool & cloudy with easterly wind. At work on board at various ship duty. I work hard and can stand it better than I once could. Commenced taking cotton today.

Saturday Oct 29. Have on board about 150 bales cotton Our colored crew work cotton. Am quite unwell
