Vel Phillips Papers (Correspondence, Box 6)

The blacks have thrice battered my sick body as well as forced us to 'fold up' our small place of business Mr. Vogel, which is no joke you know. They have taken away part of our livelihood. We went into this small business to supplement disability compensation which was in these days of inflated prices our sole income. They picked on us and picked on us for nothing. We were in dire need of the few extra dollars has gone up into the air. They just simply can't behave themselves. Unlike the Chinese they just simply can't conduct themselves in a civil or civilized manner. Anyway, when we needed police protection we did not get it. Instead, it was suggested that we the innocent victims move! Fine and dandy. Well, what of the parents of the 9 year old white girl two negro boys aged 13 had raped in a rather fashionable suburb of this city, should they, too, move? Is that a sensible way to combat negro crime and delinquency, to tell their innocent targets to get out of a given neighborhood? Of course, moving might make it easier on the cops who are supposed to protect us. Anyway, instead of telling the culprits to get out, why the tell their blameless victims to clear out! So long as we are living in America, in any part of it, we should get police protection, rather than stupid suggestions about moving. In the first place, this is not economically feasible. We just can't afford to pay the high rentals now being asked for a flat or apartment. Meanwhile, we are stuck with a shop full of merchandise. How do we move it or where? To another equally bad if not worse location? Where do we go to get way from the blacks, up to the moon, perhaps? We are two very sick people, both in need of lots of medical care. All we had ever wanted was peace and quiet and tranquility. What a hell of a life they have made for us. It is a criminal shame and a sin. No American citizen should not like a savage with a stick through his nose. That's absolutely out, Mr. Vogel.

We wish the Rev. Pottie well. He, too, knows the score. I'm certain he hates nobody, only the horrible things they do. How could a clergyman be capable of actually hating anybody? We don't hate them either, we just despise their attitudes particularly in regard to sex, which they think is an 'outdoor sport' as the rape of the 9 year old baby would indicate.

Dear Reverend Pottie:

As stated in enclosed copy of my letter to Mrs. I.Q. Griggs of the Milwaukee Journal staff, whenever I see something that looks like a duck, acts like a duck, and walks like a duck, then the only sensible conclusion I can come to is that it is a duck. And no one can convince me otherwise. A copy of my letter has also been sent to our Chief of Police, as well as to Mon. Franklyn J. Kennedy, a Roman Catholic, who is supposed to be concerned with "interracial justice" in this city but I'm afraid his function in this field involves far more politics than justice for he, too, has failed to lift a finger to help us with our negro problems. As a matter of plain fact there is not even an iota of interracial justice existing in Milwaukee and the blacks mistreat, abuse and push us white citizens around with impunity. And if we don't like it, we are told to move! In other words instead of telling the black culprits to behave themselves or to get out why they tell their innocent targets to do so! They won't touch a complaint against a colored culprit with a ten foot pole. The cops handle the colored hoodlums with kid gloves, and we ourselves have never gotten any adequate police protection. According to what I have heard on the radio from white women who had called up a Mr. Lee Vogel now on "Night Line" formerly at the Chez Paree night club, they, too, have been unable to get adequate protection in Chicago. In fact, one white lady told Vogel she was afraid in broad daylight to walk to the corner mailbox to post a letter. Well, so are we. It is an asphalt jungle. We are eager to move. We can hardly wait to "escape" from here. However, this has been very difficult due to health and economic reasons. You see since we were forced to fold up our little business we have nothing coming in except my monthly disability compensation checks out of which it is not economically feasible to pay high rental, doctor bills for both of us, etc. It is indeed a very sad commentary as well as a pretty sad reflection on the community and the authorities that a sick couple cannot on account of the wild blacks even authorities that a sick couple cannot on account of the wild blacks even be sick in peace and that we could get no police protection whenever we needed it. Maybe they can fool the general public but they certainly can't fool us, for we were not born yesterday. In connection with one negro attack a negro detective named Dewey Russ had filed a false, malicious and misleading police report, which I am utterly unable to have retracted. Interracial justice! Baloney! Your eyes would bug out if you could see what the blacks get by with. So, don't let anybody bluff you either, please.

Dear Sir:

As stated in my recent letter to Mr. Richling of the Disabled American Veterans, my bowels, the other day, while out shopping "ran away" from me on the street, and it now looks pretty serious. Also, I told Mr. Richling that I don't want to get duly alarmed about it, but as soon as I'm able I'll go to a cancer clinic for a checkup. Too, I have considerable pain right under the left ribs as well as a severe backache on the left side that seemingly is related to the bowel condition. My appetite is poor and I have lost some weight. This, however, so far as the VA is concerned is no complaint or request for examination. It is more for the record, or for future reference after I have been examined at a cancer clinic. I don't care to take any more chances with the VA 'goofing off' on another x-ray examination as it did with my chest picture, and then to gripe my head off about it. The VA might find "nothing wrong" with my bowels or whatever it is the same as it found "no TB pathology," and it took the private doctors to find it. Then, of course, I was accused of "not co-operating" with the VA, which today is a typical tactic to evade any error or wrongdoing. In other words, whenever a blunder is made blame the patient. The police do practically the same thing; they blame the innocent victim instead of the indecent and idiotic culprit, and they had accused me of being a "chronic complainer" while we had been having a lot of trouble with the negroes, particularly the John Pharr and Rose Means character who had been calling us sex names and tormenting us nightly without letup prior to their arrest for slashing clothing with a razor at six stores. We received no police protection and then when the complaints in consequence mounted up, the cops claimed I was a chronic complainer! It was just the other way around. The cops had coddled these two crazy characters. Chief Johnson may not care to hear this but it is gospel truth. They triggered this bowel trouble, too. I mean the blacks, of course, not the cops. So far as the cops are concerned why they were a bunch of stupid slobs and some of them smelled like a brewery I don't care how much the police department has been praised by the press or anybody else. They have plenty of faults and shortcomings, too. Especially negro detective Dewey Russ who had turned in a rotten and ridiculous report on the Goodwill store incident, which still has not been retracted. Anyway, whenever I see something that looks like a duck, acts like a duck and walks like a duck the only conclusion I can come to that it is a duck. By the same token whenever I see a nitwit I know he is a nitwit. Well, we happen to have some nitwitted cops and detectives in Milwaukee, too, same as elsewhere. Big "stupes."

This is to inform you that while out shopping this afternoon I lost control of my bowels right on the street. Well, I don't want to get unduly alarmed over this but it certainly does seem to be something real serious. Anyway, I intend just as soon as I'm able, to go to a cancer clinic for a checkup. I wouldn't care to be examined by the VA. Not after the way the Regional Office had erred with my last chest x-ray, and then, afterward, claimed that I had failed to co-operate with them, which is a typical tactic whenever they themselves are in the wrong about something. They, too, blame others for their own stupidity. Sure I can't "prove" they're stupid but nonetheless that's exactly what some of them, including Negro detective Dewey Russ, are. Whenever I see something that looks like a duck, acts like a duck and walks like a duck, then the only common sense conclusion I can come to is that it is a duck. I hope this is not too deep for you to "see" or to understand. I hope you'll catch on to what I'm driving at. Anyway, the rotten and ridiculous police report, too, has been preying on my mind for a long time. It sure is a terrible thing that it still has not been retracted. Therefore, nobody can blame me for having absolutely no respect for the police department, or for the Catholics and other professed Christians who have condoned it. It was bad enough to be thrice attacked without any provocation by the black animals without compounding the felony, you know. They had also given the both of us nervous indigestion and triggered the bowel condition from which I am suffering at the present time and the police can all go to hell, too. They had given us absolutely no protection, while we in great distress particularly with the John Pharr and Rose Means gang of sex maniacs. The only satisfaction we ever got was the stupid suggestion to move. No other help of any kind. When I asked Mr. Hanegraaf of the Catholic War Veterans to help us get the police protection we had desperately needed he 'cutely' retorted that it was not in his "province!" I could tell that guy something that would make him stand back on his heels, but I won't. What a hell of an answer to give a sick couple!

Dear Sir:

You're certainly a clever, cunning and crafty guy. But, so far as Dr. Kraft was concerned, on the subject of Communism, he was outnumbered three to one, and was given no chance to defend himself. However, Dr. Kraft had no right to call anybody's "rabble rouser," or to impugn without adequate basis in fact their merits and motives. My own knowledge on the subject of communism is negligible. Now, then, so far as presenting both sides of an issue is concerned, you have been extremely unfair. For instance in your discussion of illegitimacy on the air with a Mr. South, a negro, who was alone with you, you had presented but one side of the issue, not both sides of it. In other words, we white people heard only Mr. South's side of the illegitimacy issue. Why, if you are on the air together with Mr. South to debate the illegitimacy issue? Anyway, you obviously are too intelligent to foall for Mr. South's drivel. You knew that the "economics" excuse he had made for the very high incidence of illegitimacy among his people was the quintessence of stupidity but you took no exception to it. You have a brilliant brain, Mr. Vogel, so why did you not use it in this instance? As a matter of fact, you're as smart, sharp and shrewd as a lawyer, I mean a good lawyer, not a mediocre one. You yourself last night said on the air that some ought to be doing likewise and some of our stupid cops, too, ought to be digging ditches. Some of them, too, are awfully dumb. By the way, one night an air force veteran called you up in reference to the possibility of pushing a bonus and you asked him where the money was coming from, money for bastardy comes from. From "Uncle Sap." From the overburdened taxpayers, from the gullible general public. From the naive people who listened to Mr. South and his highly ludicrous remarks and were taken in by it.

Mr. South didn't know what he was talking about. He was all wet.
