character for faithfulness or capacity – but deemed it proper to appoint another person in his place.

That the Secretary be directed to transmit a copy of the above vote to Mr Wyeth."

The motion was put and not carried, Messrs Crocker and Nazro voting yea, and the President, Messrs Cheever, Curtis, Gould, Little & Read voting nay. 2 – 6.

Salary of Gate Keeper & Supts clerk

It was moved by Mr Curtis, ^& seconded by Mr Cheever, that the salary of the Gate Keeper and Superintendent's Clerk be five hundred dollars per annum. ~

An amendment was moved by Mr Nazro seconded by Mr Crocker that the sum of four hundred and fifty dollars be substituted for five hundred, but the amendment was rejected, two voting in the affirmative and six in the negative.

The motion of Mr Curtis was then put and adopted by a vote of six to two. _

T. H. Safford chosen Gate Keeper. & Supts Clerk.

It was further moved by Mr Curtis, seconded by Mr Read, that Truman H. Safford be chosen Superintendent's Clerk and Gate Keeper for the year ensuing which was adopted. _

Report of Comee on Grounds, on Improving, filling up [& grading unsold lands _]

The President as Chairman of the Committee on Grounds submitted a report containing certain recommendations for filling up, improving and embellishing the grounds of the Cemetery, which was read and adopted section by section, and then adopted entire,

[Report of Comee on Grounds, on Improving, filling up] & grading unsold lands _

of which report the following is a copy. _

"That the Committee on Grounds be instructed to expend one thousand dollars per annum in grading and improving the unsold parts of the land within the Cemetery, and that the earth removed by this process be applied towards filling up the superflous ponds and hollows in the grounds.

Embellishing with oramental trees _

That the same Committee be authorized this year to introduce ornamental trees and shrubs into suitable parts of the ground, at a cost not exceeding five hundred dollars.

Constructing Drain through Indian Ridge _

That the same Committee be authorized, if they deem it expedient, to construct a drain through Indian Ridge, from Garden Pond to Meadow Pond, so arranging the banks made by cutting this drain, that they may hereafter be used for constructing catacomb tombs; the outlay not to exceed one thousand dollars."_

The President being called away Mr Read was called to the Chair.

Upon motion of Mr Curtis, the following vote was passed.

Path laid out as a branch of Moss Path to Raymond Lot _

"Whereas C. W. Storey Esq. Executor of the late M. P. Sawyer has purchased a lot of land containing three hundred square feet, in the Cemetery of Mount Auburn, situated between Moss Path opposite to Central Square and the Northerly side of the lot of C. B. Raymond, Trustee, numbered 1994, for the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, for the purpose of making a way to said lot numbered 1994, – and whereas said lot is wider than is necessary for

a path but does not extend in length so far as to cover the whole distance to said lot numbered 1994, so that the aforesaid object of purchasing said lot of three hundred feet is not thereby attained, _

Now in consideration of the payment aforesaid by the said Storey: and of his release of all right and title to said lot of three hundred square feet

It is hereby ordered, that said lot of three hundred ^square feet be discontinued, and that a path eight feet in width be laid out by this Corporation from Moss Path, opposite Central Square, as aforesaid, to said lot numbered 1994, over the route above described, and be forever kept open for the benefit of said lot numbered 1994, and any other lots that may border upon said path.

It was further voted that said path be regarded as a part of Moss Path.

Whether deed can be made to heirs at law? Refd to Comee on Lots _

Upon motion of Mr Curtis,

Voted that the Committee on Lots be requested to consider, whether, under the Charter, a deed can be made to the heirs at law of a person, as one person, and report thereon.

Lot 209

Upon the petition of the parties in interest, Christina Lindsey of Charlestown widow of Ichabod Lindsey late proprietor of lot numbered 209, was appointed to represent said lot. _

The meeting was then adjourned.

Trustees .

The regular meeting of the Trustees was holden at the usual place on .

Present _ the President, Messrs Bangs, Cheever, Curtis and Nazro. _

The record of the last meeting was read. _

On motion of Mr Curtis,

Special Police _

Voted that Mr Bangs be a Committee to request the Mayor and Aldermen of Cambridge, and the Selectmen of Watertown to appoint the Superintendent, the Gate Keeper and two other suitable men to be nominated by the Superintendent, as special policemen in and around the Cemetery of Mount Auburn, without compensation. _

Record of Interments _

A communication was presented from Mr Mann the Superintendent, "recommending that the record of interments be kept where the numbers of the lots are given."

Voted, upon motion of Mr Nazro, that the matter be referred to the Committee on Lots to report thereon at the next meeting.

Waldo H. S. concerning deed of his lot _

The Treasurer, Mr Bond, stated that some misunderstanding has occurred with Mr H.S. Waldo, the proprietor of lot no. 1751, on Gentian Path and Spruce Avenue, with reference to the issue of a deed to him of a lot in the rear of said 1751, upon Gentian

Path, without the payment of $20 for right of choice, under the old system of selling, and also an unpaid balance for said lot, as now surveyed. _ Mr Waldo thinking that he is entitled to a deed without said payments. _

Upon motion of Mr Bangs,

Voted that the matter be referred to the Committee on Lots, with full power. _

Land Westerly of Cemetery _

Mr Nazro stated that there is a piece of land which lies next westerly of the Cemetery, fronting upon the public road, which he had been informed certain parties were negotiating for the purchase of, which purchase he feared might be detrimental to this Corporation, and asked for some action in relation thereto.

Upon motion of Mr Curtis,

Voted that the subject matter be referred to the Committee on Grounds. _

Representatives of

The following petitions for the appointment of persons to represent the several lots named were read, and it was voted that the persons therein severally nominated, be accordingly so appointed.

Lot 406 _

Levi Lincoln Thaxter only surviving son of ^late Levi Thaxter, of Newton, to represent his lot no 406: _
