Diary: Caleb E. Iddings, 1879

March Tuesday, 11 1879 Went to Mrs Chalfant's to Geo Tuckr's to office. Afternoon went again to Mrs Chalfant's. Went to the monthly meeting of the Grange taking Charley with me to Mechanicsville. Called to see "out door saw mill".

35° Clear Wednesday, 12 Went to Mrs Chalfant's to ffice, to Geo Tucker's. Jackson Hardings Wm Leizear's etc. Afternoon went to Mrs Scott's. taking Dora & baby with me Lucy Stabler called. also. __ Thomas (girl from D Thoma's & Knight boy.

Thursday, 13 Went to Geo: Tuckers etc Ernest here arfter tea had some music -

March Friday, 14 1879 Went to Geo: Tucker's Put Knob & latch on Dora's room door.

Saturday, 15 Went to Mrs: Wheeler's. Afternoon Charley went to "Shooting Match" on Scott's place. Made door to hay mow - Saw fire in the direction of "Cincinatti"

Clear Sunday, 16 Charley & I went to Geo Tucker's Robt Stabler & wife called at office. Charley went to Riverside in buggy. Albert Chandlee called also Benj H Miller.

45° Cloudy - E March Monday, 17 1879 Luelleu Massey here & had tooth extracted. Went to Rockville taking B H Miller with me. Reached home about 4 p.m. David Paterson here for advice etc

30 Clear - Tuesday, 18 Went to W_m S Bonds & Charles Crumpton's: Annie [Addis] here for advice & med: After tea Charley & I went to a meeting of the Montgomery Rifle club. I joined & was appionted on a commmittee to draw up a Constitution & by laws.

33 Cloudy - N.E. Wednesday, 19 About home most of the day Sister Beulah took tea with us I went to Dr Scott's office in the Eveneing & we had some music.

38° Cloudy - S. E. March Thursday, 20 1879 Went to office & to W_m S Bond's. B Gilpin Stabler here for advice and med also Phineas Carol. Summonsed as witness in Aquilla Cook case to Rockville

45 Clear - S. E. Friday, 21 Reached Rockville about 10 a.m. went to Court House & gave in my testimony in the Cook, Aquilla stabbing case. Cook was sent to "House of Correction" for twelve months. Reached home abut 3-30 p.m. David Patterson & Phineas Carol here for advice etc. [Chaas] Brooke (of Geo:) & Henry Miller here in Evening Phineas Carol gave our sleigh another coat of lead colored paint -

Clear March Sunday, 23d 1879

Arose late. Ernest staid all night with Charley and breakfasted with us. C & I went to P.B. Carrol's. C went to Riverside. F Snowden dined here. R. Addison here.

Cloudy Heavy Frost 28° Monday, 24 Extracted tooth for Edith Thomas. Went to Phineas Carol's in Express wagon. Reed letter from S.C. Jones Esq answered it and took letter to John Howard's for him to take to Rockville tomorrow. Ben Miller's bull "Hazed" Willie and myself home from Ashton Ellen Snowden here for advice etc.

Tuesday, 25 Went to P Carol's and to Leawood Mills in Express wagon brought home some lumber horse feed and corn meal also got 29 lbs: zinc from A.G.T for roofing lattice porch; commenced putting it on.

44 Clear Cloudy and Rain S.E. March Wednesday, 26 1879 Took Harriet and baby went to Jackson Harding's and Phineas Carol's. Sent advice and med: to Fred'k Stabler's son Caleb. Finished roof on lattice bay projection Raining. Wm J Scofield spent evening here. O Vanhorn here and had tooth extracted.

50 Cloudy Thursday, 27 Went to Fred'k Stablers and Phineas Carol's. Carol's child died before I got there. Went in evening to Dr Scott's office and had some music. Charly went to Fulford to a meeting to organize an "Archez Club". Came home very late. Painted (primed) lattice porch roof.

Clear and Cloudy N.W. 42 Friday, 28th Went to Fred'k Stabler's called at Robt Stabler's. Mrs. Marlow in the office for advice and med: Tom Budd brough child with broken mouth. H.T. Lea here for advice &c. Also Kate Stabler. Went to Levi Hopkin's.

45° Cloudy - Variable March Saturday, 29th 1879

Put coat of green paint on roof of lattice porch. Went to Edwd Lea's afternoon. Extracted tooth for his daughter Helen- A. Jackson Harding's team hauled me 1.7/8 cords of wood: bad headache.

Went to Levi Hopkin's and to Fred'k Stabler's. Extracted tooth for [Jno]: Howard. Charley and Dora went to Riverside on horseback

High Wind N.W. 32° Monday, 31

Extremely high wind all through last night and today. Went to Hitty Stabler's and purchased forks of M Soloman. Warwick Stabler called whilst we were at supper. Went to Lyceum to debating society -- Mailed letter to Marg't: Coale Reed: on Charley's salary $50.00 from Gilpin and Bentley to meet note tomorrow.

45 Clear N.W. April Tuesday, 1st 1879

[Ges]: Knight called went to W_m S Bond's & paid note & Warwick P Miller's to prescribe for his wife. Called at Ashton Afternoon went to Leas Mill and took two barrels corn to be [illegible]; snet Israel to Scott's (in wagon) after the corn. Bro Cha's took tea here, after tea Walter Scott and Dr Saml Scott came and spent evening and we had some music. Jno: Kelcloner commenced running a second line of stage coaches from Brookville to Edwad daily. Clear N.W.

44° Wednesday, 2d Phineas Carol whitewashed dining room and kitchen making 3/4 of a day. Mrs Chas: Stabler and daughter Mary Anna called. Sent Israel to Leas Mils af the [cob ]meal.

Cloudy Windy and "Squally" N.W. 43° Thursday, 3d Phineas Caroll made 3/4 of a day at painting in parlor and passage. Edwd Lea called and paid Helen's bill. Laura Hill here for advice and med for child.

41 Cloudy Snow flakes N.E. April Friday, 4 1879 Sarah Dint here for advise for infant. Painted Doras room and painted in passage up stairs. W_m Johnson called after tea. Ernest spent evening with us.

Cloudy Cold and Windy N. 31 Saturday, 5 Went to Ashton and Riverside Bro: Richard came home with me and dined here. Harry Lea called and took him back to Riverside before supper. Charly went to "Rifle Range and shot a score. Geo Sprigg's girls here for advice and med for infant

Clear 35 Sunday, 6 Geo Sprigg here for advice and med for infant. Rchd Addison here. Went to S S Store and Fulford before dinner.

39° Clear and Cloudy W April Monday, 7 1879 Ed: Dickinson and Geo. Spriggs here before breakfast. Went to Geo. Spriggs. Painted at lattice porch. Annie Addison sent for advice & med: - Douglas Miller called. Cousin Hannah Chandler and Ed Bentley called. Jno Bintley spent part of [the] evening here (music). Annual meeting Lyceum.

41° Tuesday, 8th Clear Mended camp chair. Went to dress wound through pectoral muscle in Jno Honsons left breast. Went to Phineas Carol's. Finished Constitution of "Montgomery Rifle Club" and attended a meeting: was elected a member of the Board of Directors.

Clear 42° Wednesday, 9 Took H and baby and went to J Johnson's and went to see Caroline Marriott. Exchanged wagon with her; giving my express wagon for an "omnibus" that was at the shops in the village. Afternoon took Dora and went to Fred Stabler's. Got home the "omnibus" and took it to pieces for repairs.
